Yesterday, it was reported Chanel’s revenue and profit increased by double digits last year as the storied French fashion house benefited from higher prices and strong demand for its ready-to-wear and accessories.

Virginie Viard has been the creative force behind Chanel since 2019, following the passing of the late Karl Lagerfeld. To state theFashionSpot’s forum members have encountered a love/hate relationship with the French designer, who began her career at Chanel as an intern for haute couture embroidery in 1985 would be an understatement. Viard’s most recent collection for Cruise 2025 was staged in the port city of Marsielle in Southern France, with forum member Frederic01 commenting: “This is shockingly bad. Even by Virginie Viard’s standards. Emperor’s new clothes though, this will sell like hotcakes!”. Chanel product was indeed selling like hotcakes throughout 2023, with revenue increasing 16% to a staggering $19.7 billion. Evidently someone is doing something right.

Now, it’s time to tour the highly-anticipated “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit with Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. According to The Met, the exhibit “reactivates the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools of artificial intelligence and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes.”

“The exhibition features approximately 220 garments and accessories spanning four centuries, all visually connected through themes of nature, which also serves as a metaphor for the transience of fashion. Visitors will be invited to smell the aromatic histories of hats bearing floral motifs; to touch the walls of galleries that will be embossed with the embroidery of select garments; and to experience—via the illusion technique known as Pepper’s ghost—how the “hobble skirt” restricted women’s stride in the early 20th century. Punctuating the galleries will be a series of “sleeping beauties”—garments that can no longer be dressed on mannequins due to their extreme fragility.”

The “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition runs through until September 2, 2024 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Three decades in the business and Kate Moss remains one of the most in-demand and most recognizable faces within the world of modeling. Balenciaga continue to roll out advertising campaigns thick and fast. Back in January, the storied Paris-based fashion house unveiled a ‘Closet’ advertising starring Kim Kardashian, Patricia Field (and more), each captured within the spaces of their own closets (some of the cast, at least). Then came the Summer 2024 campaign installment, lensed by Czech portrait photographer Jitka Hanzlová. More recently, Demna (Balenciaga’s creative director since 2015) secured Kate Moss, Mona Touggard, Yang Chaoyue and Juyeon as the faces of Balenciaga’s iconic Le City handbag. Not even five whole months in 2024 and that’s a total of three official advertising campaigns. Scratch that – four with the unveiling of Balenciaga’s latest, shining a spotlight upon the Rodeo handbag.

Released early February as a reinterpretation of the everyday tote, the leather goods pieces made its runway debut during the Fall 2024 runway showcase at Paris Fashion Week. The accompanying advertising campaigns sees Demna welcome back Mario Sorrenti as campaign photographer. This time around, Sorrenti fixes his lens upon brand ambassador Nicole Kidman, American model-of-the-moment Amelia Gray and (returning campaign star) Chinese actress and singer Yang Chaoyue. Demna’s ensemble cast tote the same Medium Rodeo style (named after the famed street in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles) in the simplistic campaign imagery, each adorned with different charms (like a Balenciaga ceramic tag and miniature dolphin key chain).

Louis Vuitton continue to nurture its relationship with Léa Seydoux. After all, ever since Seydoux signed on the dotted line with the storied French fashion house in 2016 as brand ambassador, she’s been the face of umpteen Louis Vuitton advertising campaigns (from fragrances to handbags), graced the covers of an endless array of magazine covers wearing head-to-toe Vuitton and regularly dons Nicolas Ghesquière’s designs on the red carpet (most recently during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival).

Naturally, the French actress is adorned in Ghesquière’s Spring 2024 Louis Vuitton collection as she takes to the cover of M Le Magazine du Monde. The weekly supplement to the iconic French newspaper Le Monde has impressed us to no end lately, thanks to a series of terrific covers with Mona Tougaard, Amber Valletta and Paloma Elsesser.

M‘s latest is devoted to the Cannes Film Festival.
