Hedi Slimane has been the most talked-about designer over recent weeks, subsequent to the rampant rumors swirling that the designer is to leave his post as Celine creative director. Today, Slimane unveiled his Winter 2024 collection for Celine Menswear, his 22nd as the creative force behind the French fashion house. Titled “Symphonie Fantastique”, from the French composer Hector Berlioz’s 1830 symphony, Slimane transports us to the Mojave Desert located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas on Interstate 15 to present his latest lineup. Slimane’s army of models storm the deserted highway, donning the designer’s signature razor-sharp tailoring, each of the looks infused with a modish elegance and Americana spirit.

Hedi Slimane (the most talked-about designer in recent weeks) first unveiled Celine Haute Parfumerie to the world back in 2019. The Celine creative director adds another fragrance to the lineup for 2024 with the introduction of Zouzou, inspired by Slimane’s obsession with 1960s youth culture. To coincide with the release of Zouzou, Slimane himself (obvi) goes behind the lens for the accompanying advertising campaign. The French designer who has been at the helm of the storied French fashion Maison since 2018 called upon Esther-Rose McGregor to be the face of the scent, with the British-American actress and daughter of actor Ewan McGregor morphing into icons of the 60s (like Jean Seberg and Tiwggy) in the immaculate and utterly flawless portrait campaign image.

Rumors remain rife within the fashion industry that Hedi Slimane is set to depart Celine as creative director.

Earlier this week, it was first reported (via Business of Fashion) that Slimane is in active contract renegotiations, following the famed French fashion designer’s six-year contract with LVMH coming to an end in early 2024. Further reports (via WWD) have since suggested the powers that be at LVMH HQ may even have a successor in the form of Michael Rider, who is currently the creative force behind Polo Ralph Lauren in New York. The suspense for any formal announcements are killing us here at theFashionSpot.

Slimane joined Celine in 2018, following the departure of Phoebe Philo. Subsequent to signing on the dotted line, the fashion pack have sat back and watched Slimane transform and propel the fashion house founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana to new heights. Revenues surpassed $2.1 billion in 2023 (a record high for the brand) and back in March, coinciding with the release of the 60s-inspired Fall 2024 collection, Celine announced a new beauty line is in the works and set to hit the market in January 2025.

One week after Paris Fashion Week came to an almighty close, Hedi Slimane is attempting to keep the fashion momentum alive and kicking, with the unveiling of his latest Celine collection for the Fall 2024 season.

Standard practice with Slimane, zero buzz-worthy runway spectacle took place but instead a short film was released to declare the collection’s arrival. Staged within a handful of famous Parisian venues, including the Salle Pleyel concert hall, La Maison de la Chimie and the Musée Bourdelle, models strolled the lavish surroundings dressed in Slimane’s collection which is an ode to the late Richard Avedon. Slimane’s latest, titled “La collection de l’arc de triomphe,” is also an homage to the 60s which the French designer refers to as “the golden age of Celine” and presented a lineup of A-line silhouettes (with razor-shop precision), go-go boots, vibrant patterns and statement sunglasses – a whole new take on the babydoll look. A total of 20 one-of-a-kind couture looks were splashed throughout the offering, in addition to the ready-to-wear looks.

It’s no secret that magazines are struggling to produce content due to the ongoing global health crisis. So they’ve been thinking outside the box. British Harper’s Bazaar captured its chosen cover subjects remotely, while other publications resorted to beautiful illustrations. Digging into the archives (a la American Vogue) is also an option. So for its latest edition dedicated to music, Numéro uses a black and white photograph of Lady Gaga lensed by Hedi Slimane for the occasion.

The chosen cover image didn’t cut it for our forum members, however. “The one Hollywood celebrity cover they’ve done in months, years if I’m correct, and it had to be her. Shot by Hedi. The only way it could be worse is if it was styled by Nicola Formichetti. A true trinity of horror. Everything on this cover is forced and fake, even the strategically placed cigarette,” critiqued Benn98.

“Quite unflattering, I’m not a big fan. Looks like she’s revisiting Jo Calderone, which is an exciting concept, but the resulting image could’ve looked much better!” aracic chimed in.

When Hedi Slimane took over the reins at Celine, we knew he’d shake things up. And, just as promised, the designer is delving back into the fragrance game with a new line of Paris-inspired scents.

The fashion house’s Haute Parfumerie collection features 11 perfumes with eight designed to wear during daylight and three to rock at night. The fragrances are unisex, mixing both traditionally masculine and feminine notes, but they all have Gallic accents, from chypre accord to flowers like iris and rose. Nine of the 11 fragrances debuted over the weekend at Celine’s perfumery at 390 rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. The other two are expected to be released next year.

Between the fun names (Reptile, Black Tie, Nightclubbing…) and the sleek glass bottles that are basically little works of art, this new endeavor is bound to pay off big time for the brand. Sadly, the new perfumes are a little hard to come by, for now.

The scents are currently available at Celine’s three Parisian boutiques plus its new perfume store and its New York City flagship on Madison Avenue. Later this month the fragrances will find their way to Celine shops in Europe and Japan before finally being sold to the masses online at the end of the month (just in time for holiday shopping, of course).

But Vogue Spain reminds us that sometimes less is more with its alluring September 2019 cover starring forum favorite Vittoria Ceretti. Photographed by Giampaolo Sgura and styled by Marina Gallo, Vittoria does preppy chic perfectly wearing a look from Hedi Slimane’s Fall 2019 collection for Celine.

What more could we ask for? “Beautiful! I’m always here for Vittoria,” raved aracic.

“Scribbling all over the cover shot like it’s a postcard doesn’t detract from the sheer beauty of that face,” admired tigerrouge.

“Stunning as always,” declared jorgepalomo.

Forum member vogue28 was also happy with the outcome: “So far, the September covers are proving to be a total washout…but the sight of the beautiful and unbelievably photogenic Vittoria Ceretti staring back at me is something I can’t complain about.”

Although the cover wasn’t for everyone. “She’s so impossibly beautiful, it nearly makes up for the banality of literally everything else about this cover,” stated KINGofVERSAILLES.

Miss Dalloway wasn’t impressed, either: “God, not even her face can make up for such a drab cover! It’s September, why so glum? Leave that for October and other throwaway months!”

“Vittoria’s beautiful, as per usual, but it’s too basic and I see nothing interesting here. It’s an absolutely forgettable cover,” proclaimed Valentine27.

Hedi Slimane’s appointment as the creative, artistic and image director of luxury French brand Celine is easily one of the most interesting and controversial moments in recent haute couture history. The French photographer and designer famous for his feisty and potent glam-rock aesthetic was perhaps the most unlikely successor for a brand like Celine — a label synonymous with relaxed, understated French girl dressing.

Slimane’s first show at Paris Fashion Week received the most polarizing reviews a runway show can possibly acquire. On one hand, he completely changed Celine’s tone of femininity by introducing loud sequins and overpowering retro accents. And on the other hand, his debut was, in a word, glorious.

And Hollywood A-listers are clearly on board with Slimane as Celine’s main man; Lady Gaga, Dakota Johnson, Amber Heard and Angelina Jolie have already been seen out and about in the new Celine.

Despite Hedi Slimane taking the reigns at Celine nearly a year ago, it’s hard to escape comparisons to Phoebe Philo’s Céline. Slimane made news recently after deciding to drop the accent on the E in Céline and reinventing the entire brand. Not everyone is a fan of Slimane’s choices; After the Spring 2019 show, The Guardian‘s review said, “Hedi Slimane rips up Celine’s female design philosophy at Paris show,” adding, “It was an uncomfortable moment for Slimane to raze to the ground the female design philosophy of a house which, for a decade under Philo, was notable for not equating a woman’s power with her sexuality.”

Despite such comments, it has not stopped Slimane from working toward his vision, which is evident in the new Celine Spring 2019 campaign photos starring Hannah Motler and shot by Slimane himself. It’s clear the creative director’s aesthetic hasn’t changed much since his Saint Laurent days (read: thin, white models, rocker chic vibe).
