From Gigi Hadid to Nyaueth Riam, models have been high on Yeliz Çiçek’s agenda when it comes to selecting Vogue Netherlands’ cover stars. Not allowing standards to slip as we head into 2024, three of modeling’s finest front four collectable covers. Across the quartet of Agata Serge-shot December 2023 covers, Karen Elson, Sasha Pivovarova and Amanda Murphy help ring in Vogue Netherlands’ party-themed latest. Complete with styling from Sarah Gore Reeves, the industry icons sports looks from fashion houses Chanel and Saint Laurent, each captured on location within the grounds of Wave Hill, New York.

With such a stellar cast, the covers immediately caught the attention of theFashionSpot’s forum members. “‘It’s the PARTY SEASON’ but these are the results? Great iconic models, but weird concept/execution. Easily forgettable,” complained MModa.

“Oh no! Was so excited by the cast too,” added Urban Stylin.

MON simply could not have agreed more, adding: “The cast is stellar, but the results leave much to be desired.”

“Party season and Agata Serge opted to shoot outdoors, under gloomy grey skies. Makes sense. Criticism aside, it’s the Sasha Pivovarova cover that is winning me over here… it’s just so clear, stark and direct that I struggle to dislike it,” voiced vogue28.

WAVES said: “Karen’s cover is the best one. She always knows how to pose, so no wonder why she’s still around after such a long time.”

“My favorite is by far Karen Elson’s. Love the pose, the expression and the vibes,” admired penny609.

Zara F/W 2021.22 by Steven Meisel

Steven Meisel has the Midas touch with every magazine cover and advertising campaign he touches turning into pure gold. Just look at Zara’s mainline campaigns over the last several seasons. Since Spring 2017, campaigns (including the Spanish retailer’s inaugural beauty campaign) have been nothing short of spectacular. Meisel’s Zara Fall 2021 offering is no different. Precious Lee, Meadow Walker, Kirsten Owen, Yumi Nu, Rianne Van Rompaey, Marisa Berenson, Sasha Pivovarova, Amar Akway, Chiharu Okunugi and Raquel Zimmermann are each captured solo with Karl Templer styling Zara’s latest collection.

The end result certainly pleased our forum members. “Dang, this is good!” declared Ed...

“Incredible! What an incredible campaign from Zara, once again, as expected,” raved aracic.

KINGofVERSAILLES shared the same level of enthusiasm: “Kind of shocking that a brand like Zara continues to produce campaigns that look more desirable, refined and frankly far more expensive than many of the ‘luxury’ houses.”

“I love every single shot! I can’t believe luxury brands will allow Zara to win the game so easily…” DK92 chimed in.

“Yes to everything!” exclaimed thatsfierce.

“I am living for the close-up shots of Raquel and Precious. Stunning! I know it’s an overused word, but whatever. It’s the only adjective I can think of that perfectly describes those shots,” admitted cottonmouth13.

“Glorious campaign… Fabulous to see such an amazing cast (Marisa Berenson being a truly wonderful surprise) and I will forever be a fan of Meisel’s studio shoots. The portrait of Precious Lee is utterly sublime!” cheered vogue28.

“Precious Lee is the best thing that happened to fashion in years. And she just continues to get better with each job,” proclaimed Benn98.

Vogue Italia March 2021 by Craig McDean

You could argue that every month is a “creativity” issue where Vogue Italia is concerned. After all, Emanuele Farneti forces us to endure themed issues just about every month of the year. So far this year we’ve encountered The Everyday Issue and The Animal Issue. Now the Italian fashion bible joins all the other editions of Vogue by focusing on creativity for March. Craig McDean captures Binx Walton, Adut Akech, Julia Nobis, Sasha Pivovarova, Saskia de Brauw and Tao Okamoto wearing pieces from Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2021 collection (selected by stylist Carlos Nazario) for the collage cover.

Vogue Italia’s latest sparked debate on our forums. “The bar is set so low that this becomes passable. One of their more decent covers. Imagine that,” said MON.

“Not as dreadful for Vogue Italia standards, at least they used professional models and photographers this time…” noted GERGIN.

SLFC was in the same frame of mind: “At least they got a good cast and production team this time and it could have been worse, but I just want it to end.”

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“Nice images, but the collage is laughable. It’s like an edit you make when you get Photoshop for the first time,” Style Savvy pointed out.

“Compared to all the stuff they’ve done (animals, streets, kids’ drawings), it’s amazing. But actually it’s boring and uneventful. It’s so sad to look at this magazine today. I will throw a party the day Farneti and team leave,” proclaimed apple.

“It could be worse,” confessed JPineapple.

“This is actually pretty exciting. I don’t mind Craig McDean doing his thing. It already looks so much more promising compared to David Sims doing his thing for Vogue Paris,” mikel chimed in.

The vast majority of our favorite fashion glossies are either doubling up on issues (a la Marie Claire), resurrecting archival photographs (think American Vogue) or commissioning artists to illustrate their front covers (like Vogue Spain) during the global pandemic. But Vogue Russia decided to do its own thing. Since the mag isn’t able to produce conventional photoshoots due to social distancing, there are zero signs of models like Hiandra Martinez or Natasha Poly posing before the lens of a famous photographer. Instead, it asked Sasha Pivovarova and Sofia Steinberg to each submit a self-portrait resulting in two unique and intriguing covers.

The covers immediately caught the attention of our forum members. “I’ve always been a fan of Sasha’s art so I’m actually intrigued by this cover,” said aracic.

“This is much more fashion-forward than that hideous nightmare from Vogue Italia. At least these two are beautiful to look at, whereas Vogue Italia made me want to vomit,” commented GivenchyHomme.

“Neither of the two covers appeal to me, but given the current circumstances, I can certainly appreciate the effort,” admired vogue28.

“I like the actual artwork, it looks very evolved. But not for a cover. The pink is too harsh and that white masthead seems out of place,” Benn98 chimed in.

“As a fan of Sasha’s work, I am disappointed that they did not choose one of her other paintings,” added avonlea002.

Srdjan wasn’t buying it: “They seem so, so late to the party considering Vogue Italia did this half a year ago!”

Vogue Russia has consistently done some great covers. But these are horrendous. At this point Spanish Vogue is the only one that has done a great cover during the pandemic,” voiced phungnam96.

Vogue Greece May 2019 : Sasha Pivovarova by Alique

It was only last month that we saw the highly-anticipated relaunch of Vogue Greece and our forums had nothing but praise for its pair of spectacular Bella Hadid covers. The Greek title continues to hit all the right notes with a set of Sasha Pivovarova covers for May 2019. A firm forum favorite, Sasha didn’t have to do much to win us over. Giving us all the summer feels in the two cover images, the first cover (below) pictures the Russian beauty looking beautiful and effortless on the sand dunes before the lens of Alique, while cover two sees Daniela Agnelli’s styling amped up with Sasha’s incredible bone structure doing all the talking.

Once again, members of our forums were impressed with the mag’s efforts. “That first cover is the most gorgeous I’ve seen Sasha. I’m smitten,” confessed Style Savvy.

“That first shot… Vogue Greece you look so good right now,” stated an equally impressed FashionMuseDior.

“Amazing first cover! So simple and yet, so striking! That’s what people need!” Lola701 declared.

“Wowwwww I love this! Everything Sasha’s done since her comeback has fallen totally flat with me, but I absolutely love her here. What a perfect summer cover — and great for Alique to get such a big booking!” applauded forum member 333101.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm was EstefaniaAbaddon: “Vogue Greece is killing it, seriously, they were able to distance themselves from the indie vibe of the new wave of Vogues.”

“Stunning! Fine, fresh, fierce! Take us back to 2005!” proclaimed khyrk.

Aracic agreed, raving, “Oh my god, yes!!! Please keep it up Greece! Sasha looks gorgeous, I’m so happy to see her.”

Aside from the odd article and throwback photos on Instagram, there haven’t been any major tributes paid to Karl Lagerfeld since his death in February. But we have a feeling that’s all about to change with the arrival of the May fashion magazines. Vogue China’s May 2019 issue leads the way with a beautiful homage to the legendary designer. The magazine scored some of Lagerfeld’s favorite muses, Claudia Schiffer, Grace Elizabeth and Sasha Pivovarova, who pose wearing archival Chanel pieces on the newsstand cover (below), photographed by Camilla Akrans and styled by Daniela Paudice. Going the extra mile, the girls also star on three solo covers, Schiffer’s being made available exclusively online while Pivovarova’s and Elizabeth’s covers will feature in the digital edition (all pictured after the jump).

Members of our forums were in awe after checking out the covers. “Now that’s how to pay tribute to someone of Karl Lagerfeld’s stature. A real nice effort from Vogue China on this one, extra special to see Claudia Schiffer here and the outcome overall is simply beautiful. Claudia’s solo and the group cover would be the must-haves for me,” vogue28 said.

“What a wonderful way to pay tribute to Karl. Other magazines should be ashamed of themselves,” added dodencebt.

“OMG, I haven’t purchased Vogue China for a long long long time, but Idefinitely wanna buy this issue, so happy Claudia landed on VC, the casting can’t be more perfect! I love when magazines choose pieces from house’s archive for the tribute, not just pick from the latest collection,” chanelh admired.

Sharing the same sentiments was Nomar: “Great covers! All the girls look beautiful and it’s a nice tribute to see them using archival pieces.”

“Beautiful covers! All the girls look amazing, healthy and glowing!” raved nicknick.

SLFC couldn’t have agreed more, writing, “Everything is just perfect and flawless.”

In the same frame of mind was forum member Linnalu: “Amazing covers, the group shot is absolutely the best VC cover in years. Well done!”

Vogue Turkey April 2018 : Sasha Pivovarova by Liz Collins

Turkey, which doesn’t usually receive all that much attention on our forums, has been on our radar lately — but for all the wrong reasons. The magazine has managed to do a disservice to a whole host of models including Hailey Baldwin, Emily DiDonato, Natasha Poly and now fails to do Sasha Pivovarova justice for April 2018. The current face of Christian Dior and a forum favorite since she first broke onto the scene over a decade ago was shot by Liz Collins against a pale yellow backdrop, flashing her signature vacant stare while wearing Prada.

Once again, members of our forums weren’t singing Vogue Turkey’s praises. “I’m used to seeing Sasha always delivering, but she looks lost here… I don’t blame her though, this styling and layout is not helping at all,” commented Legolas immediately.

“The cropping is so weird and makes her head look huge. They did her dirty,” added dodencebt.

“You book Sasha and this is the image the EIC approved? Beyond washed out. Not a good cover look. C’mon… even Collins is better than this!” zoom stated.

In agreement was forum member 333101, who wrote, “The lighting and garish colors are atrocious. She looks like a rabbit caught in headlights!”

“On this episode we’re going to learn how to make Sasha Pivovarova look AWFUL,” mocked helmutnotdead.

“It’s so lifeless!” narcyza exclaimed.

Vogue28 wasn’t buying it either. “With just about every other edition of Vogue getting a shakeup in terms of staff lately – it’s Vogue Turkey which is in dire need. They’ve had some absolutely abysmal covers recently and to have a model like Sasha Pivovarova (who is adored by many) and the outcome is this… something needs to be done,” he demanded.

Christian Dior S/S 2018 : Sasha Pivovarova by Patrick Demarchelier

Maria Grazia Chiuri hasn’t been able to catch a break when it comes to Christian Dior’s ad campaigns. Her debut Spring 2017 campaign looked more suited to the high street and the Fall 2017 images that followed failed to excite (even the Jennifer Lawrence ads were off the mark). Yet change seems to be in the air as Dior unveils its campaign for Spring 2018, ditching the multi-girl casting and allowing veteran model Sasha Pivovarova to steal the show. Also out is photographer Brigitte Lacombe in favor of Patrick Demarchelier who captures Sasha on the studio floor, showcasing her various works of art and proving less is always more.

But is it? The campaign left our forum members divided. “Sasha! What a treat. The shot is OK but I’m so excited to see her and I love that they included her painting, she’s very talented,” posted forum member LastNight upon checking out the campaign.

“I will always be happy to see the wonderful Sasha, a true star who can even make these clothes look decent,” added [Piece Of Me].

“Yeah, that’s how Dior rolls these days, the best thing in this campaign is Sasha. Period!” wrote elle_gb.

Not everyone was feeling it. “This is surely an improvement from the other seasons, as at least it has a sort of concept behind it, but what makes the image interesting is Sasha and her art, not the clothes, which still look like something I could easily find in any Zara store,” pointed out apple.

“This looks even cheaper than Zara,” added fluxxx.

TaylorBinque slammed, “How dare you have Sasha and yet you come out with the most uninspired boring fashion image. If you want to make a feminist statement then go for it. Go big. This is way too cliche and right on the note for a house a prestigious as Dior.”

In 2002, theFashionSpot launched as an invitation-only community of industry insiders and fashion fans that dissected designer collections, magazine covers and ad campaigns, celebrating some and skewering others. We soon grew to become the largest fashion-focused community on the web, eventually adding editorial reporting into the mix. Today, our forums are over 71,000 members strong — and counting.

To celebrate #15YearsofTFS, we’re honoring our dedicated community with a look back at the forum threads that demanded their attention and inspired their passion. After examining 162,820 threads and almost 10 million posts, we narrowed it down to 15 of the most momentous and impactful threads over the years.
