Subsequent to Sabato De Sarno bringing Daria Werbowy out of retirement for his first official campaign as Gucci’s creative director, the Italian fashion house’s campaign imagery has spiraled… into mediocrity. Not even campaigns photographed by David Sims, Tyrell Hampton or Anthony Seklaoui have managed to impress. Seklaoui appears to be a firm fave of the Italian designer, welcoming the French-Lebanese lensman back to shoot Gucci’s Summer 2024 campaign, aptly titled “Lido”. Inspired by the spirit of a quintessential Italian getaway, we’re whisked poolside along with a handful of models including Aboubakar Konte, Adele Aldighieri, Ana Rossolovich, Betty Schupp, Brando Erba, Camille Rowe, Gabriele Gherardi, He Cong, Jiahui Zhang and Victoria Fawole. Styled by Alastair McKimm, the cast frolic under the warm sunshine, and demonstrate their capabilities of breathing underwater throughout the splashy campaign.

“After the Daria Werbowy offering, I had such high hopes for Sabato De Sarno’s Gucci campaign imagery. However, I’ve been left so deflated and majorly underwhelmed by the vast majority of it. Not feeling this summer campaign whatsoever, hate the underwater concept and the random casting,” critiqued vogue28.

“Fun but it’s not Gucci. Nor it is aspirational,” voiced TaylorBinque.

GivenchyHomme felt the same way, commenting: “It’s a good idea, but it’s for the wrong brand. For a brand of this caliber, there should be glistening supermodels lounging on yacht with a Gucci bag and glass of champagne. Not at a pool in someone’s backyard.”

Make no mistake that Harper’s Bazaar Italia is one of the very few magazines we fawn over. Issue after issue, editor Daria Veledeeva continues to outshine the competition with an effortless ease. Covers with Apolline Rocco Fohrer, Rianne van Rompaey and Penelope Ternes over recent months have impressed us to no end. The title’s April 2024 installment is no different, eleven issues into the triumphant relaunch. Veledeeva throws not one but a trio of undeniably gorgeous covers our way this month. Cover one is photographed by Sølve Sundsbø and features the magazine’s returning cover girl Alix Bouthors in a headpiece from Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda. The second cover option is also captured by the Norwegian photographer, with Rosalieke Fuchs wearing a creation from Christian Dior Haute Couture while the third sees He Cong make an appearance via the lens of Ben Toms in Ferragamo.

Ian Griffiths had enlisted Steven Meisel for what felt like forever as Max Mara’s campaign photographer, until tasking Ethan James Green with the job for the Fall 2022 season. As a result, the young American photographer has since captured the Italian fashion brand’s Spring 2023 and Fall 2023 campaign imagery too. Once again, Griffiths, Max Mara’s long-serving creative director find himself in the mood for change and enlists Craig McDean as campaign photographer for Spring 2024. Griffiths opted to keep model Karolina Spakowski for another season, who is joined by He Cong and Felice Nova Noordhoff. Styled by Tonne Goodman, the girls roam the interiors of the brutalist Breuer Building in New York City throughout the series of campaign images.

Margaret Zhang continues to make big bold moves as EIC of Vogue China, and it has been exactly two years since the 30-year-old Australian-born-Chinese filmmaker and writer took the helm of the prestigious Chinese fashion bible and revealed her debut cover – to much fanfare. For September 2023, Zhang is jumping on the hype surrounding the Asian Games which is set to take place in Hangzhou next month and enlists model He Cong as the title’s cover star. Captured by Leslie Zhang and styled by Chinese Vogue‘s deputy fashion director Vivienne Sun, the Chinese beauty dabbles in a sport of archery as she intensely gazes down Zhang’s lens wearing a stunning emerald green couture scarf grown by Robert Wun (and flashing some enviable jewelry from Bulgari).

The cover left members of our forums speechless – almost. “I absolutely love the cover. So eye-catching,” raved tjasmine the moment the cover dropped.

Margaret Zhang has been at the helm of Vogue China for exactly seven months injecting new life into the Chinese fashion bible. Zhang’s debut cover with Jinghan Fan blew us away and recent covers with Liu Wen, Karen Elson and others have been nothing short of spectacular. As editions of Vogue around the world share the same theme for March 2022, Vogue China’s latest helps redefine beauty standards. He Cong, Ma Yanli, Niu Yu and Xu Ruoxin front the special issue captured by photographer Nick Yang. For the retro-inspired shoot, the girls transport us back to the 60s each sporting a different look from Christian Dior’s Spring 2022 collection.

It’s safe to say that Kim Jones is making big moves over at Fendi. From covetable accessories to grand haute couture creations, we’re definitely impressed. Now Jones’ first advertising campaign is finally here and it’s a breath of fresh air. Switching out Nick Knight in favor of Craig McDean, Rianne Van Rompaey, Malika Louback, He Cong along with Tianna St. Louis pose both inside the studio and around Fendi’s magnificent headquarters in Rome. Each model flaunts pieces from the brand’s Fall 2021 collection picked by Melanie Ward for the chic campaign images.

The outcome was declared a total triumph. “This has style and elegance,” said DePrada.

“Wow, the close-up shots are stunning!” cheered guimon.

“The close-up shots are where it’s at, the way they cropped them to make space for the logo makes them quite concise and impactful,” echoed YohjiAddict.

“This is turning out to be one hell of a campaign and I am ecstatic to see Malika Louback! She’s photographed beautifully, that smile is positively radiant and of course Rianne Van Rompaey is proving (once again) she’s one of the best in the business right now,” raves a clearly overjoyed vogue28.

Japan definitely has a signature aesthetic. Lately the Japanese fashion bible has been shying away from its standard white backdrop. But the mag is clearly still favoring its trademark multi-model format with the unveiling of its March 2021 issue. (The mag’s last crowded cover was way back in August of last year.) Shanelle Nyasiase, Natasha Poly, Kayako Higuchi, He Cong and Edita Vilkeviciute pose on location in the Italian region of Puglia decked out in pieces from Prada’s Spring 2021 collection (picked by Anna Dello Russo) for the cover image snapped by Luigi & Iango.

Vogue Japan’s latest fell flat on our forums. “A disappointment of a cover (despite the presence of Natasha Poly). The casting feels disjointed, the composition of the girls comes across as static and staged and the styling and whole atmosphere give me cult vibes,” voiced vogue28.

“Natasha and Edita don’t belong on this cover, they’re on a completely different level in every way and it’s almost disrespectful to group them with these new models. The entire cover gives off an eerie cult vibe,” echoed Benn98.

MON agreed: “A lovely cast, but it’s undeniable that there’s a huge disconnect between them. They showed up for the job and that’s just about it.”

“Would’ve been a lot better if it was another classic studio group shot. This must be my least favorite cover Luigi & Iango ever shot for Vogue Japan…pity. I was excited for Natasha and Edita, but they really don’t belong in this lineup!” aracic chimed in.

“All the elements don’t go well together. It’s quite an eyesore with the background and the patterns of the clothing combined with the text,” said mikel.

“Luigi & Iango’s outdoor photography is worse than Juergen Teller’s. I’ve seen Instagram pictures from non-influencers who put in much more effort than this,” called out Ken Doll Jenner.

Despite several questionable collections, Virginie Viard’s Chanel advertising campaigns frequently hit the spot. Viard secured Steven Meisel for the brand’s recent handbag campaign. Karim Sadli’s Cruise 2020 ads featuring many models of the moment left us in awe. And we still have Marion Cotillard‘s N°5 fragrance campaign to look forward to toward the end of 2020. A whole assortment of famous faces come together for Chanel’s Fall 2020 campaign captured backstage immediately after the collection’s Paris Fashion Week showcase back in March. Everyone from Adut Akech to Abby Champion to He Cong to Rianne Van Rompaey and a whole lot more pose before the lens of photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for the series of classic black and white images.

How did Chanel’s latest fare on our forums? “Glad those awful boots are not too prominent, but this could easily have been a Karl Lagerfeld campaign. It’s just so lazy and safe to do a black and white studio campaign for autumn,” critiqued Benn98.

“The art direction is very 80s/90s. The collection was terrible and the campaign is terrible! The styling is dreadful!” voiced Lola701.

“And these pictures are supposed to sell the clothes, the fantasy…” an unimpressed Srdjan chimed in.

“The more I see the photos individually, the more I love them. Everybody’s selection is just phenomenal. As a campaign for Chanel, I miss richness, exuberance and exclusivity. But honestly campaigns under Karl were even worse,” noted Vitamine W.

Forum member vogue28 wasn’t exactly disappointed: “Can’t blame Chanel whatsoever for repurposing these images caught backstage for the official mainline campaign, especially given the pandemic. It’s pretty genius and Chanel struck lucky by having these at hand.”

A selection of top models is sometimes all it takes to lift our spirits. So we are absolutely thrilled to see V Magazine serve up a plethora of fashion’s finest with the unveiling of its Summer 2020 issue. Not just one but a grand total of 15 beauties appear on the mag’s latest: Kaia Gerber, Adut Akech, He Cong, Lila Moss, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Rianne Van Rompaey, Vaughan Ollier, Mica Argañaraz, Adwoa Aboah, Ugbad Abdi, Grace Elizabeth, Lola Nicon, Vivienne Rohner, Zso Varju and Mariam de Vinzelle. All of whom were photographed in stark black and white by Dutch photographic duo Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

As usual with multi-covers, only a select few stood out. “Kaia looks incredible, very Gia Carangi,” Marc10 pointed out.

“Kaia looks so beautiful. Her cover alone would’ve been enough,” MyNameIs chimed in.

“Adut, Rianne and Mariam are the winners here. The other ones are unnecessary,” said jorgepalomo.

Also quick to add their two cents was aracic: “My favorite of the bunch is definitely Adwoa, it’s very captivating. I also love Rianne and Adut’s covers. Great work!”

“The best covers are Adut, Lola, Vaughan and (choking as I’m typing this) Adwoa,” confessed Benn98.

MON wasn’t buying it. “WHERE are the SUPERMODELS?”

“Supermodels in 1990, 2000 or 2010 were unforgettable beauties with well-established careers. Supermodels in 2020 are a few good faces, but also a collection of famous surnames with watered-down genetics plus some average-looking people the industry uses to market social trends,” critiqued tigerrouge.
