Right here on theFashionSpot, we’ve been praising the efforts of Vogue Brazil’s Paula Merlo to no end. After all, the magazine’s editor has made a solid attempt in supporting homegrown talents. Valentina Samoaio, Barbara Valente and Maria Klaumann have each graced covers over recent months. Merlo, however, is attempting to switch things up with unveiling of the 49th anniversary issue – welcoming an American model as cover girl. Give it up for Paloma Elsesser who graces a duo of delightful covers for May 2024, lensed by photographer Zee Nunes. Dressed by stylist Rita Lazzarotti, Elsesser (who already has covers of American Vogue, Vogue Mexico and M Le Magazine du Monde to name a few) is all smiles in the joyous first cover (below) wearing a Patricia Von Musulin jacket and a stack of Renata Buzzo bracelets. In the second alternative (after the jump), Paloma is decked out in a head-to-toe look from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

Vogue Brazil started the year very well, only to have a horrible cover for the anniversary edition,” cried out an underwhelmed caioherrero.

“Terrible covers from a terrible model,” Alquimista chimed in.

“Both of the photographs are not cover material. I think that Paloma looks quite good on the second cover but the tinfoil bed is just a terrible prop. Very weak covers for an anniversary issue,” added MModa.

In complete agreement was Alejandra Isami, echoing: “Kinda disappointing for their anniversary cover!”

Yet not everyone was left so disappointed. “The first cover is really beautiful. I love Paloma Elsesser’s expression, the styling and energy,” Wolkfolk reasoned.

“I’m able to appreciate the sense of joy the first cover radiates. I also love the head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana on the second cover. However, for an anniversary issue, these are seriously lacking,” vogue28 critiqued.

Following last month’s spectacular Gisele Bündchen offering, Vogue Brazil remains in the good books of theFashionSpot’s forum members and the magazine is set to remain there – giving us none other than Alek Wek as their September 2023 cover girl. The South Sudanese-British model who began her modeling career in the mid-1990s last covered the Brazilian fashion bible back in March 2020, and 42 months later is all smiles posing for photographer Zee Nunes. Styled by the magazine’s fashion director Rita Lazzarotti, Alek wears a floral look from Chanel’s Fall 2023 collection in the joyous cover photograph.

Immediately, the cover became an instant hit amongst our forum members. “I love it,” simply stated caioherrero at once, about to set the tone for commentary to follow.
“Gorgeous colors. Love it!” echoed mepps.
“Super nice! Love Alek,” DK92 declared.
Also very much a fan of the cover was Benn98, writing: “Beautiful! I like the literal nod to the Amazon. Must say Zee Nunes surprised me for once.”
“So happy to see her! Her smile always makes me smile!” enthused oaklee91.
“Love it! Brazilian magazines and photographers showcase melanin really well,” Urban Stylin applauded.
AFWQ described the cover as “perfect” and we could not agree more.

Vogue Brazil October 2018 : Gisele Bündchen by Zee Nunes

Gisele Bündchen and Vogue Brazil go together like Kate Moss and British Vogue or Anna Ewers and Vogue Germany. After a nearly two-year hiatus, everyone’s favorite Brazilian bombshell returns to the magazine’s cover for October 2018 to coincide with the release of her book, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life. Gisele celebrates her origins on location around Rio Grande do Sul, captured by photographer Zee Nunes. The current face of Stuart Weitzman is joined by her mother Vania in an intimate moment that is sure to make your heart melt.

Our forum members were left in awe over the mother/daughter moment, in addition to three other covers. “This is beautiful!” said fiqary the moment the cover dropped.

“Beautiful, especially the one with her mother,” Miss Dalloway echoed.

“The covers are simply gorgeous, especially the one with her mom, so sweet! Love that the cover story is her going back to her small home town, can’t believe no one else thought of that before,” stated Marc10.

Also quick to show the cover some love was jorgepalomo. “That cover with her mother made my entire day,” they said.

GivenchyHomme couldn’t have agreed more: “I love the mother/daughter cover. That’s where she gets her looks! I don’t really care for the other covers.”

“The only model amongst all the supers that doesn’t bore me to death is Gisele. She’s really eternally beautiful and girl can strike a face and a pose. The rest can go home,” voiced dontbeadrag.

“The cover with her mother is incredibly heartwarming and sweet, no one can argue with that. However, I need to stop seeing Gisele as the reincarnation of Captain Planet/Gaia, I get it, she cares about the environment but there are different ways of showing that,” complained marsnoop2.

“Sorry haters, but that is a beautiful cover,” forum member mepps fired back.

Brazil is firmly on our radar right now, having just celebrated its 42nd anniversary with a trio of bold and unforgettable covers. Moving swiftly on, the Brazilian title taps Joan Smalls for June 2017. Magazines can always rely on Joan Smalls to deliver fantastic covers and to receive the coveted seal of approval from our forum members. Appearing on two 70s-inspired covers, the current face of Michael Kors wears head-to-toe Gucci in cover one (below) and works Replay (for which Joan is also the face of this season) in the second cover, both shot by Zee Nunes.

Forum members professed their love for the covers immediately. “Loving both these covers,” declared TeeVanity, setting the tone for comments to follow.

“I love both covers. Joan is amazing, a real top model,” raved narcyza.

“She is giving face on these covers – I love them. Zee Nunes has done some great covers for Vogue Brazil,” forum member 333101 praised.

Legolas liked what he was seeing too: “Poses, face, light, layout, all is on point. Great job this month!”

DutchHomme simply said, “Awesome covers!”

“I LOOOOOVE the Diana Ross-esque look and Naomi Campbell vibes and all, but I wish her eyes were stronger, she looks a little dazed and lost in my opinion,” stated Bertrando3.

Also noticing the evident Diana Ross inspiration was Benn98. “Uneventful. None of these intrigue me, the styling on the first one actually looks quite budget. A waste of that nice Diana Ross wig,” he said, disagreeing with the majority.

“The first cover (above) I thought it was Naomi Campbell! Otherwise, I like the second cover (below) — more glamour and less childish than the first one,” reasoned GivenchyAddict.

Best September covers this year, anyone? “This is truly breathtaking! Caroline looks so beautiful in this soft light and gorgeous location. I also love how her child’s red hair picks up the colours of the oranges in the background. Stunning work!” hailed an overjoyed Nepenthes the moment the covers broke.

“Absolutely beautiful!” described an elated VogueDisciple93.

Sharing the same attitude toward the cover was lakomka, rejoicing, “Aww! This is how you do a portrait of a pregnant lady. Breathtaking!”

WilliamsLe010919 agreed, raving, “This is what a portrait of a pregnant woman done by a fashion magazine should look like!! Hands down one of my favorite covers this year! Truly truly breathtaking!!”

“Both beautiful covers, Vogue Brazil got these right,” applauded TeeVanity.

“Those are beautiful. Probably the best and my favorite September covers,” announced a delighted thatsfierce.

Feeling the same way was burbuja8910. “Amazing covers, finally good photos from the September issues of this year,” she commended.

“This is so beautiful. One of my favorite Vogue Brazil covers. Well done! Caroline looks effortlessly stunning. I’m in love,” confessed guimon.

“I like both covers, but her hair just doesn’t work for me,” shared justaguy right away.

“Nice colors and good styling. But what’s wrong with her hair? Awful hairstyle. Poor Jourdan. Still good to see her on another Vogue cover,” added narcyza.
In the same frame of mind was inwhiterooms: “Gorgeous, but the hair is extremely distracting and not in a good way…”

SpeakThatJDunn soon piped up and asked, “What is wrong with an afro?”

“Maybe if the hair was bigger?” replied Benn98, going on to write, “her physique already looks so petite, this small hair doesn’t help. The shots are nice and cover-worthy, love the colours, but with a wee bit more attitude it would have been perfection.”

Disagreeing with the majority was HeatherAnne, who was quick to state, “I swear Dunn gets more beautiful with every passing year. She is very commanding on both of these covers. And for those dissing the hairstyle, to me that is what makes these work!”

“I wish even more magazines etc would let go of their ‘phobia’ of natural black hairstyles and feature models with them in this great way like Vogue Brazil has done here,” applauded saucer-like.

“Whoa gorgeous, it really works, the styling makes it even more powerful. Possibly the best covers with her in a long while!” Miss Dalloway raved.

Our forum members were far from fascinated by the lackluster outcome. “Most boring model ever. I really don’t get why she’s so big. I mean, she’s cute and all, but has zero charisma and looks super lame,” Creative ranted right away.

September Issues: All the Covers We Loved and Hated ]

“Wow, her hair doesn’t look good. Looks like the stylist used a curler for the fringe, lol. I’m surprised they ran yet another pink cover, and there’s too [many] accessories on the white one. Very weak for September,” complained Benn98.

Also unimpressed with both covers was gazebo: “I love Isabeli and happy for her, but this is bad!”

ThatRascal wasn’t exactly jumping for joy either: “I think it’s time Isabeli got a new look or something. She needs a change because as much as I love her, I’ve officially checked out of the Isabeli fan club. I’m simply bored by her recent work, looking the same as she always does.” Ouch.

“Just awful and again this Prada dress on the cover. What a bore,” confessed narcyza.

“That hair and styling is just awful. September has been totally lackluster cover-wise across the board,” condemned marsnoop2

“I’m getting British Vogue vibes,” shared A.D.C. the moment the cover surfaced.

“No! I’m sorry. What’s with all the different fonts and the hot pink? And I agree with A.D.C., it looks very much like British Vogue, albeit very inferior with a pouty girl,” replied Benn98 in agreement.

Sharing the same sentiments was Kite, who pointed out, “Looks like 2005 British Vogue.”

Forum member burbuja8910 felt the same way and responded, “Totally agree, also looks like a cover of Vogue Australia. Behati looks flawless.”

“The cover would be amazing WITHOUT those texts. They’re hideous, bad font choice,” phungnam96 declared.

“It looks like the 2000 covers of U.S. Vogue. It’s better but very very dated,” shared MON, who set the tone of the thread.

“Very U.S. Vogue indeed… there’s something off with the proportions imo. Is she kneeling?” kokobombon questioned.

GlamorousBoy also noticed the resemblance. “Yeah I agree, it is very dated U.S. Vogue, with the natural background Photoshopped to look fake,” he declared.

“The face is killer but there’s something really off about the grass-sky proportion. They could at least have put her in a different garment to break up all that green. Nevertheless, it’s always a pleasure to see Amanda!” appreciated Nepenthes.

The remainder of our forum members found positives with Vogue Brazil’s latest offering. “Very U.S. Vogue, but in a good way. She looks marvelous!” noted Miss Dalloway.

TeeVanity simply credited, “This really looks good.”
