Right here on theFashionSpot, we’ve been praising the efforts of Vogue Brazil’s Paula Merlo to no end. After all, the magazine’s editor has made a solid attempt in supporting homegrown talents. Valentina Samoaio, Barbara Valente and Maria Klaumann have each graced covers over recent months. Merlo, however, is attempting to switch things up with unveiling of the 49th anniversary issue – welcoming an American model as cover girl. Give it up for Paloma Elsesser who graces a duo of delightful covers for May 2024, lensed by photographer Zee Nunes. Dressed by stylist Rita Lazzarotti, Elsesser (who already has covers of American Vogue, Vogue Mexico and M Le Magazine du Monde to name a few) is all smiles in the joyous first cover (below) wearing a Patricia Von Musulin jacket and a stack of Renata Buzzo bracelets. In the second alternative (after the jump), Paloma is decked out in a head-to-toe look from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

Vogue Brazil started the year very well, only to have a horrible cover for the anniversary edition,” cried out an underwhelmed caioherrero.

“Terrible covers from a terrible model,” Alquimista chimed in.

“Both of the photographs are not cover material. I think that Paloma looks quite good on the second cover but the tinfoil bed is just a terrible prop. Very weak covers for an anniversary issue,” added MModa.

In complete agreement was Alejandra Isami, echoing: “Kinda disappointing for their anniversary cover!”

Yet not everyone was left so disappointed. “The first cover is really beautiful. I love Paloma Elsesser’s expression, the styling and energy,” Wolkfolk reasoned.

“I’m able to appreciate the sense of joy the first cover radiates. I also love the head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana on the second cover. However, for an anniversary issue, these are seriously lacking,” vogue28 critiqued.

Paula Merlo at Vogue Brazil stays winning. The editor continues to champion homegrown talent via the magazine’s front covers, having endorsed everyone from Brazilian singer Ivete Sangalo to trailblazing Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio over recent months. Merlo has also been brilliant enough to enlist São Paulo-based lensman Lufré as one of Brazilian Vogue‘s regulars in the process, who insisted on Barbara Valente commanding our attention as the title’s cover girl just last month. Now, Lufré fixates his masterful lens upon Brazilian model Maria Klaumann with the unveiling of the magazine’s April 2024 issue. Across a duo of visually-arresting covers styled by Rita Lazarotti, Klaumann serves face as she gazes down Lufré’s lens in cover one (below) while is captured amongst the rugged wilderness of a Chilean landscape for cover two (after the jump), dressed in a Loewe dress.

“First cover reminds of Filippa Hamilton’s Vogue Paris cover by Inez & Vinoodh. Love it,” shared Xone.

“Maria Klaumann resembles Filippa Hamilton so much in that first cover,” echoed marsnoop2.

Vogue28 couldn’t have agreed more, adding: “Massively into that first cover and how I’m instantly transported back to the glory days of Vogue Paris – very Filippa Hamilton indeed. Easily one of the strongest Vogue covers I’ve seen this month, so fierce and utterly fabulous. Not to mention how Lufré is becoming a total asset to Vogue Brazil!”

“I like the first cover, very pretty,” admired thenewclassic.

“The close-up cover is GORGEOUS!” MModa exclaimed.

“The first cover has a vintage vibe and I love it! One of Vogue Brazil’s best close up covers,” WAVES applauded.

You just have to hand it to the magazines who champion and support homegrown talent. Whether it’s Vogue Spain welcoming Penélope Cruz as their cover star for the umpteenth time or Vogue Italia supporting the new generation of Italian fashion models – we here at theFashionSpot love to see it.

Make no mistake Paula Merlo at Vogue Brazil advocates local talent, and in the past three months alone we’ve encountered Brazilian singer Ivete Sangalo, trailblazing Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio and Brazilian television presenter Sabrina Sato as cover stars. It’s now Barbara Valente’s turn for March 2024. The model and rising star within the world of fashion who swept up at the Stella McCartney, Off-White and Balmain shows during PFW poses for photographer Lufré in the bold and graphic cover image. Styled by Rita Lazzarotti, the Brazilian beauty sports a look from Sabato De Sarno’s debut Spring 2024 Gucci collection.

Urban Stylin heralded: “Stunning! Barbara Valente deserves it!”

“I LOOOOVE this. She’s beautiful, and the cover is awesome,” Bertrando3 approved.

Ever since Emmanuelle Alt made the bold and impactful statement of championing Valentina Sampaio as a Vogue Paris cover girl back in 2017, Sampaio’s body of work has gone from strength to strength. Vogue Brazil soon gave up its front cover to the Brazilian beauty for December 2017 and welcomes Sampaio back once again with the unveiling of the January 2024 edition. Six years after her last cover appearance, the first transgender model to become the face of American lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret poses across three dreamy and delightful covers, via the lens of Mariana Maltoni. Captured amongst nature, both down on an idyllic beach and deep in the forest, Valentina is dressed by stylist Rita Lazzarotti in looks from Valentino, Prada and Giorgio Armani.

“Very Carré Otis for sure on the first one, a bit of Brooke Shields as well,” noted Bertrando3.

“I love the first cover! Finally, I will buy another Vogue Brazil after Gisele Bündchen last year,” shared forum member caioherrero.

WAVES chimed in: “The third cover is the best one and she looks beautiful. A good start to 2024 for Vogue Brazil!”

Vogue Brazil November 2023 : Ashley Graham by Marcos Florentino & Kelvin Yule
IMAGE | VOGUE.GLOBO.COM

Since 2017, back when Alexandra Shulman gave Ashley Graham her very first cover of Vogue, the model and body positivity advocate has been welcomed as cover girl onto multiple editions of Vogue from across the globe. From fronting American Vogue (twice) to shimmering in sequined Valentino on Vogue Germany – Ashley’s cover repertoire is second to none. Vogue Brazil is the latest to welcome Ashley as their cover star, who covers the Brazilian fashion title’s November 2023 edition, across a duo of dynamic and glamorous covers. Captured by creative twosome Marcos Florentino and Kelvin Yule (of MAR+VIN), complete with styling from Rita Lazarotti, the industry fave rocks looks from Dolce & Gabbana.

Ultimately, the covers received mixed feedback across our forums. “This is so horrible,” voiced an underwhelmed carioherrero.

“There’s no point getting your cover star to glam it up, if they look like they’re waiting for some curtains to dry, while going for the world record in gathering toilet paper with their feet,” stated tigerrouge.

“Are we in 2015?” asked Kimy Jo.

“It’s just boring,” forum member mepps sighed.

Nevertheless, not everyone was so quick to disapprove of the covers. “At the very least, the two covers are marginally stronger than Ashley’s recent cover of Vogue Germany. I am very pleasantly surprised at how much I’m a fan of these two covers – and this whole shoot!” declared vogue28.

“I actually love the covers and editorial. Finally a magazine got the right styling and photographer for a curvy woman on a fashion magazine,” Urban Stylin praised.

Following last month’s spectacular Gisele Bündchen offering, Vogue Brazil remains in the good books of theFashionSpot’s forum members and the magazine is set to remain there – giving us none other than Alek Wek as their September 2023 cover girl. The South Sudanese-British model who began her modeling career in the mid-1990s last covered the Brazilian fashion bible back in March 2020, and 42 months later is all smiles posing for photographer Zee Nunes. Styled by the magazine’s fashion director Rita Lazzarotti, Alek wears a floral look from Chanel’s Fall 2023 collection in the joyous cover photograph.

Immediately, the cover became an instant hit amongst our forum members. “I love it,” simply stated caioherrero at once, about to set the tone for commentary to follow.
“Gorgeous colors. Love it!” echoed mepps.
“Super nice! Love Alek,” DK92 declared.
Also very much a fan of the cover was Benn98, writing: “Beautiful! I like the literal nod to the Amazon. Must say Zee Nunes surprised me for once.”
“So happy to see her! Her smile always makes me smile!” enthused oaklee91.
“Love it! Brazilian magazines and photographers showcase melanin really well,” Urban Stylin applauded.
AFWQ described the cover as “perfect” and we could not agree more.

Gisele Bündchen to Vogue Brazil is what Kate Moss is to British Vogue, and all feels right in the world whenever either of them is fronting the Vogues of their birth countries. Practically September issue worthy, the mag’s editor-in-chief Maria Laura Neves welcomes the Brazilian bombshell onto the Brazilian fashion bible for the 24th time, who first made her debut as a Vogue Brazil cover girl back in October 1997. Fast forward 26 years for the August 2023 edition and we encounter the megawatt modeling sensation via the lens of photographer Lufré, shot up against a clean backdrop and striking a pose in one of Nicolas Ghesquière’s creations from Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2023 collection, as selected by stylist Rita Lazzarotti.

Ultimately, the cover had our forums a divided bunch. “The dress is very distracting… and the whole composition is too simple. If not for Giselle, it’s very bad IMO,” GivenchyAddict voiced.
“WTF is that dress?” exclaimed matheus_s.
“The dress structure ruined it. Would have been better with something softer,” Urban Stylin added.
“10 years ago, the concept of Vogue Brazil/Gisele/Ghesquière would have been supremely sensational, sizzling, sensual, saturated, smouldering etc etc – all in high-contrast living colors and glamazon graphic lines. However, in 2023… it’s a washed-out, pale test shot against a sickly yellowy backdrop,” Phuel critiqued.
Not everyone else, however, agreed. “A 10/10 from me! Fair enough, I’ve encountered more sensational Gisele Bündchen covers of Vogue but it’s Gisele Bündchen on the cover of Vogue, so I’m happy and content. More than happy to be completely honest – this has rather made my day!” raved vogue28.
“I love this,” approved caioherrero.
“When it comes to (super)models who succeeded the OGs, Gisele is simply – INCOMPARABLE. 43-years-old, more than 1,200 magazine covers and counting…,” shared Zorka.

Vogue Brazil March 2022 : Gigi Hadid by Zoey Grossman

It’s hard to believe that Gigi Hadid’s last cover of Vogue was a year ago. Now Vogue Brazil welcomes back the American beauty for March 2022 three years after her last appearance. Admittedly, the Brazilian fashion bible doesn’t cater to our every desire every month. (The last time the magazine did was back in September 2021.) The title once again has our undivided attention with Gigi back on the cover complete with photography by Zoey Grossman and styling from Pedro Sales. For the bold cover image, the current face of Moschino and Versace dons a glossy red lip and a colorful look from Valentino’s Spring 2022 collection.

Gigi’s latest failed to stimulate the majority of our forum members. “She looks dead and tired and not into it. If that was her intent to look ‘demure’ or fierce or strong, it simply didn’t work. It’s just so sad,” critiqued Bertrando3.

“The lights are on, but nobody’s home,” BlueRuin pointed out.

“Gigi’s work at the start of her career was far better than what we see now. I still have fond memories of her Spanish Vogue cover story from March 2015 when she had a glow to her skin and life in her eyes,” noted tigerrouge.

“Love the colors and the composition. But it’s ruined by Gigi’s sick look,” proclaimed mikel.

Urban Stylin shared the same sentiment: “The colors are beautiful, but ruined by the expression.”

“I love the colors and I’m gonna leave it at that,” echoed kokobombon.

“A smile or even a hint of expression from Gigi wouldn’t have gone amiss in the cover image. Gigi looks drowsy, lifeless and rather miserable here, but despite the lack of expression, I do love how vibrant and glossy the cover is,” reasoned vogue28.

Vogue Brazil September 2021 : Binx Walton by Luigi & Iango

Nowadays, it’s an extremely rare occasion when Vogue Brazil takes our fancy. But when the magazine does, it’s usually thanks to photographic duo Luigi & Iango. Over the last two years, covers featuring Gigi Hadid, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bündchen, Cindy Crawford and Precious Lee sent us head over heels. Now the Brazilian fashion bible’s answer to Vogue’s shared theme of new beginnings has us dancing for joy. The creative twosome join forces once again with Binx Walton for September 2021 to deliver a pair of dynamic and dramatic covers. Binx wears looks from Saint Laurent’s Fall 2021 collection chosen by stylist Pedro Sales for both covers. Binx looks absolutely fierce while striking a pose in the middle of the desert on cover one (below) and on the alternative black and white cover (after the jump).

“WOW to that second cover!” exclaimed Joromana.

But not everyone felt the same way. “Her body looks weird, disproportionate. Seems it was Photoshopped to make her lower torso and legs appear abnormally long,” woemwoem pointed out.

“It looks very…artificial. I like it, but I don’t love it,” admitted aracic.

Vogue Brazil June/July 2021 : Precious Lee by Luigi & Iango

From the get-go we’ve been obsessed with Precious Lee. After a history-making moment on the Versace runway followed by a coveted spot in the brand’s advertising campaign, replacing Ashley Graham as the face of Marina Rinaldi and covers of British Vogue and American Harper’s Bazaar, Precious is only just getting started. So it should come as no surprise to see the firm forum favorite starring on Vogue Brazil’s June/July 2021 offering. Serving major early 2000s glam, the American beauty wears a custom Karoline Vitto dress for the simply stunning cover shot captured by photographic duo Luigi & Iango.

“Wow, she looks amazing! Definitely a supermodel in the making… Somehow this just looks refreshing despite the theme being the overplayed 90s/2000s R&B meets Versace vibe,” approved Benn98.
