Marc Jacobs stays switching it up when it comes to enlisting photographers for his various different advertising campaigns. Over recent seasons, everyone from Tyler Mitchell and Tyrone Levon to Juergen Teller and Harley Weir have been commissioned to lens campaign imagery for the designer’s eponymous brand. Added to the list with the unveiling of Jacobs’ latest is Carin Backoff. Shining a spotlight upon ‘The Sack Bag’ for Summer 2024, Jacobs endorses a whole plethora of personalities as the face and embodiment of the handbag that launched earlier this year. Sabrina Carpenter, Vittoria Ceretti, Irina Shayk, Anok Yai, Charli XCX and Gabriette make appearances throughout the vibrant and splashy campaign, each styled by Alastair McKimm and captured against a gray backdrop within Backoff’s photographic studio.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Vittoria and Irina look great! Not sure about the panties, tho,” voiced justaguy.

“Love the photographs! Beautiful and minimal with a pop of hot, bright colors!” MModa admired.

Also very much a fan was vogue28: “The strongest Marc Jacobs campaign in what feels like forever! There’s a sense of life here, feels more… sultry and alive than recent Marc Jacobs campaigns. The casting is great, but would’ve just left it at Vittoria Ceretti, Irina Shayk and Anok Yai. Nevertheless, a thumbs up from me!”

“The girls look great but the products are not desirable…” scoffed forum member thiago.

KoV agreed, exclaiming: “Imagine getting this cast together just to hawk that bag!”

Vogue Australia January 2021 : Naomi Watts by Carin Backoff

Say what you will about Australian Vogue, but at least Edwina McCann supports local talent. (Although the mag’s recent covers starring Adut Akech and Cate Blanchett were a little lackluster.) Now the Aussie fashion bible welcomes back Naomi Watts for January 2021 four years after her last cover appearance. On the current cover, the actress wears a look from Chanel’s Cruise 2021 collection selected by stylist Elissa Santisi for the shot captured by Carin Backoff.

The cover garnered mixed reviews from our forum members. “Another basic cover from Vogue Australia. There isn’t any improvement in sight since the atrocity that was Awkwafina’s cover last month,” critiqued an unimpressed Ken Doll Jenner.

The Hollywood Reporter at best. Vogue Australia lost it,” stated MON.

“I have said this and I am going to say this again — Carin Backoff should back off from photography,” commented dontbeadrag.

GERGIN wasn’t all too impressed, either. “She looks very uncertain, nobody does my Naomi Watts dirty like that!”

“The cover may not be the most groundbreaking, but it’s undoubtedly a thousand times better and more Vogue-worthy than Awkwafina’s cover from last month. I like Naomi Watts and oddly enough I’m a fan of the neon green masthead with the rest of the color scheme — it’s bold and impactful,” voiced vogue28.

THD96 definitely agreed: “Loving the combo of black, white and neon green which makes the cover really stand out. Much better than Awkwafina last month.”

“Not a fan of her, but I really like the cover. Art direction, color scheme, the styling — everything,” approved Benn98.

V Magazine #122 Winter 2019 : Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott & Ella Balinska by Carin Backoff

has undoubtedly lost its edge over recent years and the only two covers to capture our attention lately featured Lady Gaga and Bella Hadid. Following an underwhelming 20th anniversary celebration back in August, the magazine unveils its Winter 2019 installment starring the three actresses from the upcoming Charlie’s Angels remake: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. The trio huddle together in the Carin Backoff-shot cover, each wearing a crop top from Chanel and a pair of Guess blue jeans picked by Karen Langley.

But the cover was a big flop on our forums. “Crikey, what have they done to the flawless Naomi Scott? Everything is a miss, from the hair to the makeup to the styling,” ranted Benn98 the moment the cover dropped.

“Does anyone buy this magazine? This is pure trash now,” called out caioherrero.

“I like the idea of jeans with Chanel…but this is still a little too Glamour magazine for me,” said Xone.

Nomar was also quick to critique the styling: “They look like a bunch of rich teenagers trying to be edgy.”

MON wasn’t impressed by the cover shot, either. “What an utter disservice to the beauty of Naomi and Ella. They should have never extended the logo beyond their faces.”

“The Chanel tops paired with Guess jeans was a good call; teenagers will probably eat it right up just like they will this unnecessary remake,” commented dodencebt.

Forum member phungnam96 simply called the cover “basic.”

US Elle May 2019 : Dua Lipa by Carin Backoff

has been at the top of our forum’s radar ever since Nina Garcia landed at the Hearst-owned title early last year, and in 2019 alone, Garcia has already managed to secure such notable cover stars as Jennifer Aniston, Ashley Graham, Gigi Hadid and Taylor Swift. Impressive, right? Continuing to give the likes of Vogue a run for its money, ELLE‘s latest features Dua Lipa on two covers photographed by Carin Backoff and styled by Anna Trevelyan. The 23-year-old hitmaker reclines across the studio floor in both cover images, decked out in looks from Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring 2019 collection (subtly paying tribute to Karl Lagerfeld).

According to tFS forum members, the team behind the shoot missed the mark with this one. “I love Dua but not this cover, I really don’t like that thing on her head.. I don’t think it fits with her style,” said apple the second the covers struck.

“Dua kinda represents that idea of fun! The idea of a couture swimsuit is fun but this cover is not fun at all. A fail,” Lola701 said.

“It had all the makings for a stellar cover on paper – Carin Backoff, Due Lipa, who we all know is very photogenic, so I’m not sure how they’ve mucked this up. And can we stop with this Chanel swimsuit? It’s very difficult to get right due to the kitschiness. That headpiece is too much,” added Benn98.

“Dua photographs well, sad that Nina wasn’t able to produce that! Terrible styling. Terrible execution. What an utter waste,” MON wrote.

SLFC wasn’t much of a fan either: “Saw Dua Lipa in the title and got excited. Now I am so disappointed.”

“She always has such a fun and stylish vibe, and they definitely didn’t catch that. I got excited too, when I saw her name, but it’s really nothing special,” sighed Anna147.

Fact: Ashley Graham needs more magazine covers. Whether she’s fronting Vogue Arabia, Glamour, British ELLE, British Harper’s Bazaar, New York Magazine or starring as the face of David Yurman, Ashley works the lens like there’s no tomorrow. Nina Garcia gives the American model her latest endorsement, awarding her the cover of ELLE  for February and getting 2019 off to a positive start. Photographed by Carin Backoff and styled by Anna Trevelyan, Graham proves every inch her worth, giving good face in the fierce newsstand cover (below), dressed in an embellished Christian Cowan number.

Needless to say, members of our forums were in love. “Stunning cover. She seems to be getting better with each shoot. Love whatever she’s wearing, especially considering it’s not a big brand,” Benn98 approved.

“No words, it’s truly a gorgeous cover,” dodencebt applauded.

“Love this one! Ashley is so beautiful and perfect for ELLE magazine,” championed apple.

In total agreement was 333101. “Nice to see ELLE back on form! Have to say Ashley looks stunning and I’ve certainly never been a great fan,” she confessed.

Bertrando3 was also quick to give a standing ovation: “LOOOOOOOVE every shot and the cover! Congrats Ashley on redefining beauty in high-fashion. Such a smart businesswoman and great model too!”

“Super beautiful cover. Ashley looks confident and fierce,” admired bluestar.

Vogue Mexico & Latin America October 2018 : Emily Ratajkowski by Carin Backoff

Emily Ratajkowski might not be our forum members’ dream cover girl but she must be doing something right. Recently, Emily has landed covers for Marie Claire, ELLE Australia and Paper, and now it’s Vogue Mexico’s turn, making us forget those lifeless Hailey Baldwin covers from last month. Photographed by Carin Backoff and styled by Miguel Enamorado, Emily turns up the drama and goes all sultry and glam for the October 2018 issue.

Don’t expect any of our forum members to be making a mad dash for the newsstand. “Wonky lips on the one cover, and wonky hair on the other! She’s perfect for these tacky sex kitten-type of shoots, but it doesn’t really suit Vogue Mexico’s newfound classy direction,” said Benn98 straight away.

“Thanks for the laugh team VM! Oh and Kendall called, she wants her dead eyes back!” laughed Miss Dalloway.

“It all looks so mediocre to me. And I wish models didn’t rely so much on pouting or having their mouth open – they should retire the mouth and try to focus more on their eyes instead for a change to convey something (this is Vogue, not Insta),” remarked Morgane07. “She always seems to have the same makeup and hair. Do we ever see her looking different?”

Also not too impressed was forum member GivenchyAddict. “Vogue Paris by Terry Richardson. That’s all,” he slammed.

CrisGalaxy noticed some slight resemblances toward French Vogue too, commenting, “Reminds me of the February 2009 cover with Lara Stone!”

“Don’t like the cover shots, but I actually really like the shoot. It just doesn’t feel like it belongs on Vogue. It just feels like it belongs on something between Vogue and Maxim,” voiced SLFC.

You can always rely on Love Magazine to deliver out-of-the-box cover concepts. Gearing up for the release of its upcoming Fall/Winter 2017 edition, the magazine released an issue teaser last month starring Hailey Baldwin and Miss Piggy. As it turns out, actress Nicole Kidman is Love‘s latest cover girl as she tries on a whole new image in a swimsuit and cowboy hat (not your average Kidman cover). Photographed by Carin Backoff, Nicole poses on location in Nashville, Tennessee while rendering our forum members almost speechless.

“Obsessed!” declared forum member magsaddict the moment the cover dropped.”It’s great to see a more casual side of Nicole, we’re so used to seeing her styled in a very regal and modest way. It’s a ballsy cover and she pulls it off effortlessly,” he stated.

“I actually like this. I’ve always enjoyed seeing celebrities, who we’re so used to looking polished and perfect, stripped back and a little gritty. Plus it’s someone who actually has earned her fame through this weird thing called talent and hard work so that’s always a plus, especially for Love,” praised lelaid.

Also quick to show their approval was maxlinden: “She’s serving game, set, and match. Love the fun concept. Nicola looks stunning!”

Dodencebt liked what he saw too. “A big, hard yes from me. I cannot remember the last time I was this surprised by an A-lister in a magazine – the covers and editorials lately are so safe and everything has to go through endless deliberation so it can be ensured that it perpetrates the myth of the perfect star. Bravo Nicole, proving once again what a risk taker you are!”

“This is the surprise of the day, and I’m here for it. It feels like a 2007 issue of POP, and I love seeing someone that generally strict in their appearance dressed down. Great team on this!” applauded youarearockstar.

“Love it. A side of her we wouldn’t have seen if she was on Vogue,” mathiaskatz pointed out.

“I will definitely buy this issue because when will we see Nicole Kidman in this kind of shoot and styling ever again? Totally loving this!” exclaimed an elated TaylorBinque.
