Balmain S/S 2022 by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

It’s been two years since a Balmain advertising campaign truly commanded our attention. Not even Olivier Rousteing stepping behind the lens was enough to save the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 seasons. To celebrate 10 years leading the label, the designer recruits Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott for Spring 2022. The French fashion house also commissioned several models to mark the occasion. Naomi Campbell, Lara Stone, Adut Akech, Carla Bruni and Mariacarla Boscono each pose solo on location at La Seine Musicale in the suburbs of Paris.

“I always thought Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott would be a good match with Balmain…” disapproved DK92.

“Not impressed, quite underwhelming actually,” shared THD96.

GivenchyHomme agreed: “I’ve seen lookbooks that have more effort put into them.”

“I don’t know what the hell is going on with Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott these days. Seeing the result, I’d have hired Juergen Teller,” said helmutnotdead.

“I prefer when Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott go oversaturated instead of this Teller aesthetic,” admitted thiago:).

“It’s like they tried to emulate Saint Laurent’s aesthetic, but just couldn’t get it right,” Nomar pointed out.

“Was the hair and makeup crew on a leave of absence?” wondered aracic. “This could’ve been so glamorous.”

“Not Balmain or Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott’s finest hour, but the casting certainly compensates for the fairly standard and subpar imagery. The weak coloring in the daytime photos is awful. The photos seemingly shot at night with Naomi and ones of Adut posing under a vibrant blue sky are far superior!” wrote vogue28.

The global health crisis is forcing major fashion houses to get creative. Conventional photoshoots are out thanks to social distancing and travel bans. That’s why Jacquemus opted to photograph Bella Hadid and Barbie Ferreira remotely and Riccardo Tisci asked Kendall Jenner to shoot herself for Burberry’s TB Summer Monogram campaign. Now Valentino follows suit with its #ValentinoEmpathy Fall 2020 ads. Pierpaolo Piccioli joins forces with an impressive cast that includes Adut Akech, Christy Turlington, Janet Mock, Leon Dame, Liu Wen, Mariacarla Boscono, Naomi Campbell along with Vittoria Ceretti. The brand is even donating 1 million euros to Rome’s Lazzaro Spallanzani hospital to coincide with the campaign.

A few images in particular stand out for our forum members. “I’m all for Janet Mock. Such a goddess!” admired helmutnotdead.

“Can we all just take a moment to celebrate the fact that Janet Mock is featured in this, a black trans woman in a high-fashion campaign is something we don’t see every day and should be applauded,” raved [Piece Of Me].

“Liu Wen, Mariacarla Boscono, Christy Turlington and Vittoria Ceretti should have been the only ones in the campaign!” declared Mercury6181.

“Wow, Liu Wen is really serving it in this cluster-mess of a campaign. She’s even got the wind in the hair action going on! Should’ve just given her the solo campaign based on effort alone,” praised RedSmokeRise.

But the campaign wasn’t for everyone. “It can’t be a real campaign. It’s so bad, I feel embarrassed looking at this,” expressed a clearly disappointed avonlea002.

“I’ve seen more organized and cohesive Instagram feeds. This is terribly embarrassing,” echoed aracic.

There’s nothing like a great cast shot by Luigi & Iango to grab our attention. Enter Mônot’s first-ever advertising campaign. Lebanese designer Eli Mizrahi’s label burst onto the scene during Paris Fashion Week back in March and its Fall 2020 campaign hits all the right notes. The ads star an impressive lineup of modeling’s finest: Amber Valletta, Alek Wek, Candice Swanepoel, Kate Moss, Jourdan Dunn, Mariacarla Boscono and Xiao Wen Ju. The glamorous and stylized campaign transports us to Al Ula in Saudi Arabia with Carine Roitfeld on styling duties.

The campaign immediately became a hot topic on our forums. “Kate the Great! This is fantastic! Those landscapes, those models — pure perfection,” applauded aracic.

“It’s fabulous, very Mugler, very opulent! Carine only delivers when it’s big budget and she delivered! Bravo!” raved Lola701.

“I like it, seen it a thousand times, but it’s got good energy and a lovely cast. Xiao is on fire,” commented YohjiAddict.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“The Xiao shoot with the veil looks very Newton-ish. As airbrushed and tacky as it looks, I can’t help but love it! The casting is stellar…” said SRank.

“I prefer the finesse of Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, but this is a decent imitation,” confessed GivenchyHomme.

But a few of our forum members were left scratching their heads. “How did this no-name brand get the money to cast these stars?” wondered dfwn2n.

“What’s this brand? They decided to take a shot using supermodels, a supermodel stylist and all this outdated glam,” critiqued Alien Sex Friend.

Vogue Japan March 2019 : Mariacarla, Chiharu, Irina, Natasha & Imaan by Luigi & Iango

Photographers Luigi & Iango have been the only thing keeping us even remotely interested in Vogue Japan lately. After a slew of unimpressive covers featuring actress Tilda Swinton and rapper Nicki Minaj, our forum members had all but written the magazine off. Thankfully, the publication has gone back to what it does best for the March 2019 issue: featuring models on the front cover. Mariacarla Boscono, Chiharu Okunugi, Irina Shayk, Natasha Poly and Imaan Hammam do glam rock for the multi-girl cover photo (Japanese Vogue‘s signature), decked out in mini dresses from Hedi Slimane’s debut Celine collection, styled by Anna Dello Russo.

According to our forum members, however, it was a missed opportunity. “The casting couldn’t be any more random! Mariacarla is definitely the one who doesn’t belong. And Irina looks unrecognizable. Everyone’s poses look terrible in full length. And then there’s the hideous styling which succeeded in making Celine look very high street,” remarked Benn98.

“Era of Innocence but they all dressed like … that,” laughed Rigida.

“Obviously, this styling doesn’t work on grown women. What they were thinking?” mocked Lola701.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“It is almost impressive how they managed to produce such a bad cover when Mariacarla, Imaan and Natasha are involved,” [Piece Of Me] said.

Apple felt the same way, writing, “How is it possible to make these stunning women look this bad?”

Sharing the same lack of enthusiasm was Ken Doll Jenner: “Three strikes already, Vogue Japan. Even Luigi & Iango, who can usually save this magazine managed to fail miserably. But then again, it’s not entirely their fault because those horrendous Celine dresses are a crime.”

“This is tragic! Well, every month is usually tragic for Vogue Japan. They need a new EIC or something. Every month the covers and everything look the same. Nothing new or fresh,” critiqued RanThe.

“Looks like leftover fashion from the Christmas season which should be in the sale section,” mocked tigerrouge.

One thing for certain, there are better cover alternatives from the shoot. Check them out and share your thoughts here.

Forget American Vogue‘s mega September spectacular, each year, our forums eagerly await the reveal of Vogue Italia’s take on the all-important September issue. However, due to some staff changes and a massive overhaul of the magazine earlier this year, we were unsure what to expect this season. Last month’s Lara Stone cover was declared a total flop and the title is currently doing its best to stimulate interest in its latest issue. So much so, three different photographers were commissioned to capture the multiple September 2017 covers, with Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and Willy Vanderperre each submitting fashion stories for us to deliberate over (all three featuring Italian beauty Mariacarla Boscono). But are three photographers and two same-sex kisses enough to please the masses?

The covers by Mert & Marcus (above) were the first to feel the wrath of our unimpressed forum members. “Indecisive cover, hesitant. It should have been more bold/statement. Forgettable,” scolded Nymphaea.

“I really, really resent this!! For September I don’t need gimmicks like this!!” hollered Miss Dalloway.

“This can’t be a September cover. Too generic, boring and lifeless,” zacatecas570 stated in disbelief.

“I know they’re trying different things but the non-Meisel covers always end up falling flat compared to the Meisel ones,” said Scotty.

Starry made his feelings clear toward Inez & Vinoodh’s covers (above). “The new cover by I&V really makes me think that Vogue Italia has lost itself. The main cover with Mariacarla and the fold-out image is so disconnected!” he disapproved.

Also not buying it was GivenchyHomme: “I don’t like all these covers. It shows a lack of confidence. One strong image is all this magazine needs to make a statement, that’s how it’s always been. This, however, is a mess.”

“I agree, Lack of confidence indeed. Coupled with uncertainty,” replied an unfulfilled MON. “It frustrates me that they felt that this kind of gimmick is better than producing one strong cover. Like come on, the new Italy concept can be represented by one strong cover. Seriously, 3?”

“Laughable. This is sad. Should we really take this serious? If they continue like this, they are bound to loose credibility,” protested guimon.

Members of our forums soon ignited a debate. “Unusual for Bazaar and an unexpected choice, I like it. October issues are always so much better than the September ones,” championed a pleasantly surprised honeycombchild.

“Lovely! Simple but effective,” added rox_yr_sox.

“Not bad, love the colours and snuggly fur, but I think Mariacarla’s cut doesn’t suit her face type. And maybe a softened and smoother hairstyle would’ve been better?” questioned Benn98, just as forum members began to pick minor faults.

MON wasn’t a fan of the hair, either: “I like this. It’s very soft. However the hair… It goes against the entire mood of the cover. It’s too heavy for me.”

Forum member happycanadian agreed, saying, “She’s gorgeous and I’m so happy for her that she’s landed this cover. It’s an unexpected choice! With that being said, the hair is god-awful. It looks like a $3.00 wig from a discount costume shop.”

“The hair isn’t working however I’m so excited to see Mariacarla getting this cover!” approved YohjiAddict.

Sharing the same sentiments was Miss Dalloway, writing, “The image is not right for the cover… Either way I won’t complain since this is such a welcome refreshing choice…”

“I love it. Who cares if she’s not as well-known as Kendall or Gigi? She’s high fashion aristocracy and those are just peasants with money,” mocked Wintergreen, showing enthusiasm toward Mariacarla’s cover appearance.

Forum members were not feeling the concept. “No. This Looks cheap, like a fragrance campaign for 12-year-olds,” slammed dcmaike at once.

“First the Prada background and now this?” asked a horrified SpeakThatJDunn.

Benn98 shortly responded, writing, “My thoughts exactly!! But in theory I’d say first Céline, Prada, now Chanel! This must end. I’m not warming to this, and Mariacarla Boscono doesn’t have a very commanding presence to at least carry this. So disappointed!”

Sharing the same sentiments was jeffandtheworld: “Why! For such a beautiful collection.. WHY!”

“This looks like a desperate and a rather stereotypical way to appeal to the Asian market, if you ask me. I’m not a fan of it,” declared a far from impressed dodencebt.

“This looks like a sad collage that some fashion student did in the late 00s. Very, very disappointing. I would never [have] expected this from Chanel,” disapproved whitewine92.

Elle_gb echoed, “The styling and Maria look great but I’m not sure about the background. This collection is so beautiful, so I’m not a fan of that confusing background.”

Once again, our forum members weren’t having it. “I’m so sick of this big cast on the street thing,” complained an unamused SpeakThatJDunn the second the campaign image surfaced.

“Tell me I am looking at behind-the-scenes pics instead of a real campaign! Come back next season and bring back good models,” ranted DutchHomme.

“Please, make this Irina hype stop. Please. PLEASE. Even Bella outshines her in that close up,” added EstefaniaAbaddon, as discussion began to target Irina.

TaylorBinque wasn’t much of a fan either, noting, “When you are in a group shot and Lily Aldridge outshines you, you seriously need to reconsider your modelling career. Too many models that they all become irrelevant.”

Sharing the same underwhelming sentiments was Riseup. “This looks so ****ing cheap and amateur, an America’s Next Top Model challenge is way more exciting than this, NEXT!”

“Would it kill them to use just one or two models? I know they have the whole #GGang BS, but there’s a lot of dead weight here,” pointed out orchidee.

“First image and already disappointed!” Nomar declared.

This doesn’t sound as though it’ll get much better. Await more campaign images and join the conversation here.
