Vogue Portugal October 2023 : The Fame Issue
IMAGE: VOGUE.PT

As editor of Vogue Portugal, make no mistake that Sofia Lucas favors issues to be crafted around a specific theme. Concepts since the start of 2023 have centered around Innocence, Lucky, Revolution, Pleasure, Voyage, [Un]Popular, Coming Back and now the magazine’s installment for October 2023 gives us: The Fame Issue. A total of five collectable covers come our way with the issue, with cover one and two going to Georgina Rodríguez (girlfriend of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo) who poses across a pair of glam covers via the lens of Branislav Simoncik. Cover three sees modeling royalty Paulina Porizkova captured by Simoncik also while Brazilian model Cintia Dicker is photographed by Ricardo Abrahao on the fourth cover. For the fifth and final cover option, Simoncik is once again behind the lens, this time shooting Angolan model Maria Borges.

The covers ignited debate on our forums straight away. “Dead at Cintia Dicker! Vogue Portugal punched Vogue Brazil’s face – I love it,” heralded Kimy Jo.
“100% here for Cintia, entirely under appreciated in the fashion world,” echoed marsnoop2.
“Stunned by Cintia’s cover. The rest, I could’ve done without. Not the best from Vogue Portugal but definitely the better magazine (once again) this month,” Petrus chimed in.
Aracic voiced: “Something about Cintia Dicker’s cover strangely appeals to me, but I just can’t seem to fully appreciate this edition. I see the potential and I recognize the intention but it doesn’t hit the mark for me.”
Vogue Portugal is the most pretentious Vogue cover-wise,” commented a disapproving Rigida.
“As much as I genuinely could not care less about Vogue Portugal, I will admit there always appears to be some soft of effort from the team who complies each and every issue, and the dedication to a print product is always evident. For me, here, it’s the Paulina Porizkova cover which reigns supreme…” approved vogue28.

2022 Cannes International Film Festival

After skipping 2020 and scaling back for 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival is back in full force. Which is great for us since it usually produces fashion moments on par with the Met Gala and the Oscars. Although we have to admit, a decent amount of looks were relatively lackluster.

When it comes to designers, certain ones reigned supreme. We witnessed several dresses from Valentino’s Fall 2022 offering, aka the pink collection, take to the red carpet. Sharon Stone stuck with Dolce & Gabbana probably because she stars in the Italian fashion house’s new handbag campaign. As usual, there were plenty of haute couture looks to go around. Fendi, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior and Chanel are just a small sampling. Custom creations were also trending with Cara Delevingne’s revealing Balmain gown one of the standouts.

The jewelry was also something to behold. Especially when it came to necklaces. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta dress was amplified by Bulgari’s Eden The Garden of Wonders necklace, for example.

On the beauty front, hair really turned heads. Bella Hadid’s wet-look hairdo with sculpted strands in the middle of her forehead really made a statement. As did Grace Elizabeth’s piecey pixie.

While we expect over-the-top looks at the Met Gala, attendees at the annual CFDA Fashion Awards tend to play it safe(r). But that didn’t stop Ashley Graham from stealing everybody’s thunder decked out in a structured-shoulder Christian Siriano black dress and matching hat. Officially now a fashion icon, Jennifer Lopez showed off her abs in a bedazzled crop top and corresponding maxi skirt, both custom Ralph Lauren Collection. The Hadid sisters also turned heads with Gigi sporting a cornflower blue look from Louis Vuitton, while Bella went disco glam in Michael Kors Collection. (We also must give a shout-out to Ciara, who rocked a custom Vera Wang ensemble.) Check out who won awards below and then scroll through the slideshow above to see who slayed the red carpet.

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 21: Elle Fanning attends the screening of "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" during the 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2019 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Cannes is known for grand gowns and this year, celebrities really upped the stakes. From dresses so big they needed their own zip code to blinding bling in the form of necklaces, cuffs and earrings, there was so much to take in at every premiere. And there were plenty of structured silhouettes, especially when it came to jumpsuits. (We even spotted a pair of rompers on the red carpet.)

But the biggest star of this year’s festival was Elle Fanning. The youngest jury member in the event’s history, the actress really went for it each and every time she set foot on the red carpet. And we appreciate all the effort the 21-year-old put into her appearances.

In case you weren’t glued to your computer to check out all the premiere looks, we went ahead and put them together in one handy-dandy slideshow. You can thank us later.

There were lots of suits and sparkles at this year’s The Fashion Awards (aka the British Fashion Awards). While most of the suits were pretty streamlined, some of the gowns were pretty OTT boasting everything from feathers to big back bows. And the naked dress is alive and well over in London with Kendall Jenner wearing one of the most risqué looks of the night. Kaia Gerber picked up her Model of the Year award in style, decked out in a glitzy Alexander McQueen dress-over-pants combo. And Meghan Markle looked supremely elegant in a black Givenchy gown fittingly as she presented the fashion house’s current artistic director, Clare Waight Keller, with the British Designer of the Year Womenswear honor. See who else went home a winner below and then scroll through the slideshow to see all the eye-catching red carpet looks.

As expected, last night’s annual amfAR Gala Cannes was model central. While you had a handful of actresses (Kristen Stewart, Ruby Rose, Laura Harrier, etc.) and a singer or two or three (Ellie Goulding, Nicole Scherzinger, Teyana Taylor), it was wall-to-wall catwalkers at the benefit. So it wasn’t surprising to see lots of sheer gowns along with flashes of leg and cleavage. But quite a few stars opted to suit up with sets featuring everything from embellishments to zippers. Red was a hot hue and there were pops of blue, especially when it came to eye makeup.

Check out all the fashion highlights in the slideshow above.

The Cannes International Film Festival is known for grand gowns and boy, did it deliver this year. Of course, it helped that the 2018 jury president was none other than Cate Blanchett. Her many red carpet outings left no doubt who the queen of this festival was. We saw lots of capes, elaborate trains and the ever-present see-through dresses (one even came with a set of matching boots). But we were surprised that peach proved popular, vintage gowns were favored over current collections in many cases and that everything from shorter hemlines to suits were welcomed(?). In the midst of all the fashion and fanfare, 82 women took part in a women’s march to call attention to the need for more women filmmakers and the festival’s complicity in this stark lack of diversity. The number of stars that took part was significant (Blanchett, Léa Seydoux and Salma Hayek were just some of the big names) because it represented the 82 female directors who have been part of the festival over its history, a far cry from the number of male directors whose films have been accepted. For all the highlights from this year’s festival, check out the jam-packed slideshow above.

T-minus-two months to go until Edward Enninful takes the reigns at British Vogue, and in the meantime, the W creative and fashion director is keeping busy. Most recently, the Ghanaian-born fashion editor donned his G-A-P-emblazoned director’s cap for a certain American heritage brand. The industry icon cast, styled and directed Gap’s newest ad, an homage to the eternal wardrobe staple that is the basic white tee.

Gap is well aware that its classic 90s pieces have reentered the spotlight, albeit with a 2017 twist. In the ad, dubbed “Bridging the Gap,” a diverse cast of individuals shows how they wear their plain white topper whilst singing along to Boney M.’s “Sunny” and dancing to the beat of their own proverbial drum.

Diversity Report: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back for Spring 2017 Ads ]

“I love the optimistic American style that Gap celebrates and the simplicity of the basic white T-shirt that allows you to be yourself,” said Enninful of the project. “Growing up, I loved the imagery I saw from America as it celebrated being the land of the free and home of the brave. This project is about authenticity and people living their truths.”

Per usual, Enninful put on his people. The cast includes many a frequent Enninful collaborator, along with others he admires and champions. The ad stars actresses Priyanka Chopra and Yara Shahidi, rapper Wiz Khalifa, champion fencer Miles Chamley-Watson, model and actress Christie Brinkley, Broadway star Jonathan Groff and models Alek Wek, Maria Borges, Adwoa Aboah, Ellen Rosa, Fernanda Ly, Jasmine Sanders, Lineisy Montero and Casil McArthur.

“It takes a lot of courage to be the person you want to be. I am ‘Bridging the Gap’ by living my truth. I am not going to hide myself from the world,” affirmed McArthur, one of the four transgender models to walk in Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2017 show.

It’s important to note that, while the ad features models of various ages, races and gender identities, it fails to deliver on the size diversity front. Still, “Bridging the Gap” is a strong effort from two longtime diversity champs.

We’re not exactly sure how it happened, but somehow the amfAR galas have become associated with sheer gowns as opposed to the charitable cause that drives them. That was definitely the case at this year’s Cannes gathering with a bevy of models seemingly trying to one-up each other in the see-through department. In addition to peekaboo elements, many stars flocked to feathers in all shades of the rainbow. Quite a few attendees opted for dark, almost gothic gowns and there were even a few who made a statement in striking pants ensembles. Check out all the fashion highlights from last night’s gala in the slideshow above.
