2022 Cannes International Film Festival

After skipping 2020 and scaling back for 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival is back in full force. Which is great for us since it usually produces fashion moments on par with the Met Gala and the Oscars. Although we have to admit, a decent amount of looks were relatively lackluster.

When it comes to designers, certain ones reigned supreme. We witnessed several dresses from Valentino’s Fall 2022 offering, aka the pink collection, take to the red carpet. Sharon Stone stuck with Dolce & Gabbana probably because she stars in the Italian fashion house’s new handbag campaign. As usual, there were plenty of haute couture looks to go around. Fendi, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior and Chanel are just a small sampling. Custom creations were also trending with Cara Delevingne’s revealing Balmain gown one of the standouts.

The jewelry was also something to behold. Especially when it came to necklaces. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta dress was amplified by Bulgari’s Eden The Garden of Wonders necklace, for example.

On the beauty front, hair really turned heads. Bella Hadid’s wet-look hairdo with sculpted strands in the middle of her forehead really made a statement. As did Grace Elizabeth’s piecey pixie.

Keep reading to see all the must-see looks from the premieres at the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival.

Cannes International Film FestivalForget the Oscars and the Met Gala. The Cannes International Film Festival is the epitome of glamour. The mantra “Go big or go home” was practically coined for the annual star-studded gathering. Although the 2020 edition was canceled due to the health crisis, last year it returned on a much smaller scale. (Although Bella Hadid still manged to deliver two amazing looks.) The good news? This week the festival returns, hopefully with a bang. So we decided to reflect back on the greatest looks ever to hit the French Riviera before the 2022 festivities get underway. We’re talking epic feathered trains, sculpted skirts, decadent embroidery and eye-catching embellished bodices. And let’s not forget all the dazzling jewelry. Fashion institutions Stéphane Rolland, Ralph & Russo, Atelier Versace, Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier are all well-represented as their pieces are often designed for a grand stage like the Cannes International Film Festival. From A-list actresses to an iconic princess, these looks are emblazoned into our memories as some of the best, not just of Cannes, but of all time. Ready to take a look back through time? Then scroll down to relive the most breathtaking looks to ever grace the festival’s red carpet.

2021 Met Gala

With a theme like “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” we weren’t sure what to expect when it came to the 2021 Met Gala. Unlike previous years when the dress code was more established, many attendees decided to go rogue. Sure, some went with patriotic options. Hence red and blue being popular choices. But a large percentage just dressed to impress, er, stand out.

There were plenty of American designers on display. Jennifer Lopez served up some real 70s glamour in Ralph Lauren. Kate Hudson’s pink Michael Kors Collection ensemble also turned heads. And Amanda Gorman’s blue Vera Wang stunner was a striking nod to the Statue of Liberty.

There was certainly a lot of skin. The naked dress was back in a big way with everyone from Kendall Jenner to Irina Shayk indulging in the trend. Others decided to flash flesh in far more strategic ways.

Scroll down to see all the incredible red carpet looks from the 2021 Met Gala.

We’re the first to admit that the fashion at the 2021 Cannes International Film Festival was a little lacking. Perhaps that’s because it was missing some of its most stylish regulars. But there were still several dramatic moments and gowns. Bella Hadid managed to wow twice. First in a vintage and slightly altered Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture creation. The model really turned heads, however, in a recently debuted Schiaparelli Fall 2021 Haute Couture stunner. Jessica Chastain also gave us two winning looks. As did Sharon Stone and Gemma Chan. The award for most daring red carpet look? Why that goes to Tilda Swinton, of course. The actress and living fashion legend hit the premiere of The French Dispatch in a colorful Haider Ackermann ensemble. (Confession: We’re more excited about Tilda and Haider’s reunion than Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck getting back together.) Golden Globes gowns

We’re patiently awaiting the impending glitz and glamour of Sunday’s Golden Globes broadcast. Although it’s definitely going to look different than previous years thanks to the pandemic. We decided there’s no better time to look back at the best looks to ever grace the show’s red carpet. From Marilyn Monroe’s sparkly gown in the early 60s to Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett’s impressive showings. There’s certainly lots to love. Especially since the Golden Globes honors both film and television. Which means the red carpet is always jam-packed with fashion goodness.

Check out the slideshow to reveal all the Golden Globes gowns that grabbed our attention.

As a result of the ongoing pandemic, the 2020 CFDA Fashion Awards was put on hold. Set to take place today, this year’s celebration would’ve included the usual mix of fashion-minded folk. And they would’ve all been decked out in designer goods designed to make a statement. Often taking a back seat to “bigger” fashion events like the Met Gala and the Oscars, the CFDA Fashion Awards is responsible for some of the industry’s most memorable red carpet moments. Who can forget Rihanna’s sparkly and sheer Adam Selman outfit? Gigi Hadid’s vivid Versace getup years later was also a standout. Then there was Ashley Olsen’s surprisingly colorful dress from the 2009 season. Basically, the awards show is always worth checking out. Sadly, most of us weren’t privy to its early years since it wasn’t really heralded as something to watch until recently. So many missed out on some truly epic looks courtesy of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Hurley, Renée Zellweger and others. But we’re about to rectify that. In an effort to give it the respect it deserves, we’re looking back at the best looks from the CFDA Fashion Awards. Whether you enjoy 80s excess, 90s glamour or sleek styles from the early 2000s, you’ll find something to fawn over.

There were three key pieces to every Karl Lagerfeld outfit: a low ponytail, sunglasses and a sophisticated white shirt. “If you ask me what I’d most like to have invented in fashion, I’d say the white shirt. For me, the white shirt is the basis of everything. Everything else comes after,” Lagerfeld once proclaimed. So it makes sense that after celebrating the late designer at Karl For Ever, close friends and influential figures are planning yet another tribute to the designer and his iconic white shirts.

A Tribute to Karl: The White Shirt Project has some famous fashion industry insiders offering their own spin on those signature white shirts. Takashi Murakami, Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Diane Kruger, Tommy Hilfiger, Alessandro Michele, Amber Valletta and Carine Roitfeld are reportedly up for the challenge. The shirts will be displayed at Lagerfeld’s headquarters during Paris Fashion Week in September. Each piece will be reproduced 77 times and sell for €777 since seven was the designer’s favorite number.

All proceeds will be donated to Sauver la Vie, a French medical research charity close to Lagerfeld’s heart.

While we expect over-the-top looks at the Met Gala, attendees at the annual CFDA Fashion Awards tend to play it safe(r). But that didn’t stop Ashley Graham from stealing everybody’s thunder decked out in a structured-shoulder Christian Siriano black dress and matching hat.

Officially now a fashion icon, Jennifer Lopez showed off her abs in a bedazzled crop top and corresponding maxi skirt, both custom Ralph Lauren Collection. The Hadid sisters also turned heads with Gigi sporting a cornflower blue look from Louis Vuitton, while Bella went disco glam in Michael Kors Collection. (We also must give a shout-out to Ciara, who rocked a custom Vera Wang ensemble.)

Check out who won awards below and then scroll through the slideshow above to see who slayed the red carpet.
