You’re about to see a whole lot more of Kate Moss down at your local newsstand. After all, the powers that be at Condé Nast are making full use of their recent fashion story with the iconic Brit model, from the pages of British Vogue‘s May 2024 installment. Said shoot, lensed by Nikolai von Bismarck, has since turned up on the covers of Vogue Germany, Vogue Taiwan and now Vogue Japan. As opposed to her German and Taiwanese counterparts who opted for a photograph of Kate in full-color, Japanese Vogue‘s Tiffany Godoy selected a black and white shot the current face of Fendi, Balenciaga and Anine Bing for June 2024. In the classic and timeless portrait, Moss (who appeared on the magazine’s inaugural issue for September 1999 and was last on the cover in April 2012) is dressed by Kate Phelan in Chanel.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“My favorite of the [recent] Kate Moss covers,” instantly approved kokobombon.

“I’ve found all three covers of Vogue with Kate by Nikolai von Bismark to be solid. One of the very rare occasions in which I’m able to stomach Condé Nast’s shared content strategy. I love the look of this, can appreciate the use of the black and white and the soft lilac masthead which complements the shot beautifully. It’s all just so well done,” commended vogue28.

Also an admirer was forum member jeremydante: “This is pretty. I love this angle and the hair.”

Not everyone, however, with in agreement. “I see they went for a painting instead of a photo. Creative,” voiced Alquimista, suggesting some serious post-production has occurred.

“I miss the old Vogue Japan/Nippon,” sighed MON.

Vogue Japan is no different to any other edition of Vogue, in being a shadow of its former self having undergone some major and significant changes over recent years. Tiffany Godoy is the current head of editorial content and under her reign, covers of the Japanese fashion bible are either an extreme hit or a massive flop. This month, Godoy has a huge hit on her hands in the form of Vogue Japan’s “fantastic” April 2024 cover, with Anok Yai becoming cover girl in the process. Via the lens of photographer Heji Shin, the Egyptian-born American beauty who is the current face of Prada and Fendi poses in a look from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Spring 2024 collection for Christian Dior (selected by stylist Patti Wilson) in the ultra-fabulous cover image which gives us major Y2K vibes.

“Anok Yai shows up and shows out. She makes modeling look like light work. There’s something angelic with a strong hint of command and control about the cover – and I like it,” approved TerraVera.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm toward the outcome was forum member MON, commenting: “Now this is what a Vogue cover SHOULD look like! Captivating and remarkable! Stunning!”

“This may be my favorite Vogue Japan cover since Anna dello Russo left. Such a commanding cover!” marsnoop2 praised.

Aracic shared the same sentiments, echoing: “Yes, this is definitely their best cover since AdR days. Quite beautiful!”

“LOOVEEE the cover. You can hardly go wrong with Anok!” exclaimed Ihhbl.

“A truly fantastic cover! The strongest Vogue Japan’s had in what feels like forever (but in reality was October 2023 with Mona Tougaard). This gives me major flashbacks to those electric Christian Dior advertising campaigns by Nick Knight, under John Galliano. Lovvvvve this!” raved vogue28.

You’ve heard it here on theFashionSpot on more than one occasion: Vogue Japan just isn’t the same. Since Condé Nast installed Tiffany Godoy as the magazine’s head of editorial content, covers have been extremely hit and miss. For March 2024, Godoy welcomes Sora Choi as cover girl, who has rapidly became one of the industry’s most prolific of Asian models. For the Spring 2024 campaign season alone (thus far), the beauty who hails from South Korea already has advertising campaigns for Prada and Giorgio Armani tucked up inside her portfolio. Via the lens of photographer Peter Ash Lee on Japanese Vogue‘s latest, surrounded by a floral display, Sora is dressed in an embellished look from Gucci’s Spring 2024 collection, selected for the occasion by stylist Alvin Yu.

“The new issue of House & Garden looks promising,” laughed avonlea002.

House & Garden at least makes the effort to use houses and gardens. This looks like a florist’s store that’s been set up in a studio,” forum member tigerrouge chimed in.

Also far from overjoyed at the sight of the cover was dontbeadrag, commenting: “This is a total failure. Styling is bad, photography is bad – everything is terrible!”

“For me everything works except the model,” confessed DK92.

“I find this very pretty. Sora looks so cute,” ivano admired.

Vogue28 voiced: “Admittedly, this isn’t the worst Vogue Japan cover I’ve across under Tiffany Godoy. Very appropriate for a March issue, despite the cliche of the florals for spring. I’m liking how Sora’s lips seem to be be a perfect match the flowers, which is a very nice attention to detail. One slight snag I do have is the amputated-looking arm on the right… so unfortunate.”

By now, we’re well accustom to various editions of Vogue sharing content. The latest fashion shoot to be shared across multiple editions of the Condé Nast fashion bible is Selena Gomez x Michael Bailey Gates. Vogue Mexico first secured the shoot for their January 2024 installment and now Vogue Japan is rehashing the exact same story for February 2024. At Japanese Vogue, however, the magazine’s head of editorial content Tiffany Godoy opted for an entirely different cover photograph. On this occasion, Selena is captured via Gates’ lens in black and white, and sits perched on the photographer’s studio floor while dressed by stylist Clare Byrne in a black Prada coat from the brand’s Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“It’s not bad,” confessed oaklee91 the second the cover came to light.

“Much better than the Mexican edition,” Xone instantly approved.

In the same frame of mind was vogue28, adding: “I’m able to admire and appreciate this, a thousand times more than Selena’s Vogue Mexico cover. This is far more simple, more chic and far more easy on the eye. Also love how she’s wearing the Prada coat, as well as the black and white photography teamed with the orange Vogue Japan masthead. A nicely done cover, IMO.”

Not everyone, however, was so forthcoming. “The cover image choice is much better than the one from the Mexican edition but it’s still weak,” voiced avonlea002.

“Why show the parts of the studio set? Very annoying,” pointed out a disgruntled Kimy Jo.

“What’s the thought process that goes into choosing someone like Selena Gomez for multiple Vogue covers? Yikes,” exclaimed an unforgiving blueorchid.

Vogue Japan just hasn’t been the same since Mitsuko Watanabe departed the title back in 2021. Tiffany Godoy has since been installed as head of editorial content, and we miss the days of Luigi & Iango shooting each and every cover with a selection of supermodels. Covers under Godoy just haven’t quite managed to hit the spot over recent months (with the firm exception of October starring Mona Tougaard). The unveiling of the mag’s last offering of 2023 for December, sees models Abény Nhial and Mary Ukech come together via the lens of photographer Hugo Comte, who twin in complimenting looks from Miu Miu’s Fall 2023 collection in the Patti Wilson-styled cover shot.

Needless to say, member of theFashionSpot forums weren’t feeling it. “The wigs are distracting. Vogue Japan can do so much more than this,” commented lanvinray.

“Their expressions are terrible and all that white space clashing with the bottom makes the cover look super cheap. December, uh?” an unamused WAVES voiced.

“Awful photography, awful styling, horrid wigs and a horrid cover. It’s like something from the late 90s/early 00s but in the worst possible way, I like the blue masthead and that’s it. You just know Luigi & Iango would’ve smashed a cover shoot with Abény Nhial and Mary Ukech!” declared vogue28.

Fierceification felt the need to share: “Like a 90s RnB album cover, but not a major label group aka Total or Zhané standard, but rather one for a girl duo that managed to scrounge up the funds for an hour’s session with a professional photographer at his ‘studio’ in advance of releasing their independent label debut album that maybe 100 people bought and ended up retailing for $1/50p on Amazon Marketplace five years later!”

“It’s an awful amateur cover for me. I hate it with a passion: the wigs, the styling, the lighting – everything feels sooooooo cheap,” complained Bertrando3.

Glamour should always be on the agenda, and Vogue Japan is delivering us endless amounts of glamour with the unveiling of their October 2023 cover. The Japanese fashion bible’s head of editorial content Tiffany Godoy enlists Mona Tougaard as the mag’s latest cover star, who poses for photographer Hugo Comte, 32 months after her last. Tougaard, who is of Somali, Ethiopian and Turkish heritage serves nothing but glamour and poise in the glossy cover photograph, styled by Patti Wilson wearing a look from Burberry’s Fall 2023 collection.

Needless to say, the outcome thrilled the vast majority of our forum members to no end. “STUNNING! I love seeing fashion through Hugo’s lens and Mona looks amazing,” raved fenty.
“Love everything. Especially the yellow, so friendly to the eyes,” admired oaklee91.
“I don’t mind this at all. There’s a vintage element that works,” Urban Stylin commented.
Vogue28 applauded: “The best, most glamorous and most high-fashion cover of Vogue Japan, in what feels like forever! Not even a massive Mona Tougaard fan, but she is selling me this to no end. Obsessed with how polished and poised the cover image is, it’s perfect IMO!”
Although not everyone was so quick to applaud the outcome. “The obvious lightening of Mona’s skin tone just makes me angry,” voiced FashionFanatico.
“They’ve totally flattened out her bone structure with that lighting and retouching,” bluebanter chimed in.

It’s the most important time of the year for us fashion/magazine folk, as our favorite fashion glossies begin to unveil their all-important fashion editions of the year – the September issue!
First up, like clockwork, is Vogue Japan’s offering of the month. To kick-start the festivities, the magazine’s head of editorial content Tiffany Godoy selected none other than Hailey Bieber as the title’s cover star (reappearing on the mag’s front cover a whole five years after her last). Captured by photographer Richard Burbridge and with Patti Wilson on styling duties, the firm fave of Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello sports a look from the legendary French fashion house’s Fall 2023 collection in the cover shot – teamed with some Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Needless to say, our unfiltered forum members were straight on the magazine’s case regarding the outcome. “I’ll give it to them – it actually conforms to being a traditional cover shot. It’s not some art school concept, flipped at an angle, cut off at the top, scrawled over with amateur fonts,” reasoned tigerrouge.
“I’m with you 100%,” responded vogue28. “The cover is far from stunning, and certainly doesn’t excite me but it’s the first Vogue Japan cover in months that feels… somewhat normal. I am very much a fan of the sight of Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent, those autumnal colors and the warmth this cover radiates – especially for a September cover.”
Sharing the same enthusiasm was MyNameIs, adding: “I like it. Sleek, glamorous, and beautiful. Not often you see that in fashion these days, which is a shame!”
However, not everyone was so forthcoming. “Out of all the nepo and reality TV models she is easily the worst. She has zero presence. The clothes always just consume her completely,” voiced Gary89.
“Does she know how to close her mouth? Her facial expression is terrible and always the same,” disapproved forum member JPineapple.
“Oddly, I like this. I feel like I shouldn’t though. Maybe our universal standards have just fallen so much,” commented marsnoop2.

Despite our beloved Luigi & Iango-shot covers becoming a thing of the past, the change in the air at Vogue Japan appears positive. Tiffany Godoy is now the magazine’s head of editorial content and Asian representation has been at the top of the agenda when it comes to cover stars. Recently, we’ve encountered everyone from Yumi Nu to Mika Schneider (twice). Now Hikaru Utada graces the publication for the very first time for July 2022. Photographed by Shoji Uchida and styled by Kyohei Ogawa, the Japanese-American singer and songwriter wears an ensemble from Sacai’s Fall 2022 collection for the striking cover shot.

“Absolute icon!” praised russianelf the moment the cover dropped.

“I’m loving the return of the white background and a more classic direction,” admitted kokobombon.

RedSmokeRise shares the same sentiment: “I like it! Simple and clean!”

GivenchyHomme likes it, too. “Oh I’ve missed this. It’s all about the subject and the clothes, nothing else. It’s exactly how it should always be!”

“I love the dominance of red against the stark, clean background. An austere, effective composition that highlights the architecture of the clothes well,” raved an equally impressed Ken Doll Jenner.

But not everyone is buying it. “I like the fact that it’s Vogue Japan with an all-Japanese team, but why did they make her look like a CGI character?” asked Urban Stylin.

“There’s just something about this that I severely dislike. Perhaps it’s Hikaru Utada’s vacant expression or the placement of the cover photograph and the missing ‘O’ from the Vogue masthead,” critiqued vogue28.

Like multiple other editions of Vogue, Vogue Japan is under new management with Tiffany Godoy at the helm. Asian representation appears to be at the top of the agenda as Mika Schneider, HoYeon Jung and Yumi Nu have starred on recent issues of the Japanese fashion bible. Now Maryel Uchida is featured on the June 2022 issue through the lens of photographer Hanna Moon. Magazines certainly favor certain models. Whether it’s Anna Wintour welcoming back an old fave to the cover of American Vogue or Edward Enninful giving a British Vogue cover to his BFF, it’s a regular occurrence. Not even six months into her tenure, Tiffany Godoy is already playing favorites. Mika Schneider pops up on the cover of Vogue Japan for May 2022 a mere three months after her last appearance. Wrapped up in a look from Prada’s Spring 2022 collection selected by stylist Sissy Vian, the current face of Moschino poses for photographer Nathaniel Goldberg.

Ultimately, the cover divided our forum members. “This is beautiful! Very early Vogue Nippon. Undoubtedly my favorite cover since the change…” admitted aracic.

“Really good styling, I actually like that Prada dress here and I hated it on the runway. I think this is a nice image of Mika and a very deserved repeat cover for the most relevant model of Japanese descent in quite a while,” noted YohjiAddict.

“Simple but effective,” voiced WAVES. “Mika’s facial expression is just on point. Nice color combination, too.”

“I can’t stop staring at this cover! She looks so self-assured and natural. It’s like the photographer took a candid shot on the street versus a studio shot… It’s so unusual and refreshing,” appreciated iriswills.
