Vogue Japan June 2024 : Kate Moss by Nikolai von Bismarck

You’re about to see a whole lot more of Kate Moss down at your local newsstand. After all, the powers that be at Condé Nast are making full use of their recent fashion story with the iconic Brit model, from the pages of British Vogue‘s May 2024 installment. Said shoot, lensed by Nikolai von Bismarck, has since turned up on the covers of Vogue Germany, Vogue Taiwan and now Vogue Japan. As opposed to her German and Taiwanese counterparts who opted for a photograph of Kate in full-color, Japanese Vogue‘s Tiffany Godoy selected a black and white shot the current face of Fendi, Balenciaga and Anine Bing for June 2024. In the classic and timeless portrait, Moss (who appeared on the magazine’s inaugural issue for September 1999 and was last on the cover in April 2012) is dressed by Kate Phelan in Chanel.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“My favorite of the [recent] Kate Moss covers,” instantly approved kokobombon.

“I’ve found all three covers of Vogue with Kate by Nikolai von Bismark to be solid. One of the very rare occasions in which I’m able to stomach Condé Nast’s shared content strategy. I love the look of this, can appreciate the use of the black and white and the soft lilac masthead which complements the shot beautifully. It’s all just so well done,” commended vogue28.

Also an admirer was forum member jeremydante: “This is pretty. I love this angle and the hair.”

Not everyone, however, with in agreement. “I see they went for a painting instead of a photo. Creative,” voiced Alquimista, suggesting some serious post-production has occurred.

“I miss the old Vogue Japan/Nippon,” sighed MON.

Yesterday, it was reported Chanel’s revenue and profit increased by double digits last year as the storied French fashion house benefited from higher prices and strong demand for its ready-to-wear and accessories.

Virginie Viard has been the creative force behind Chanel since 2019, following the passing of the late Karl Lagerfeld. To state theFashionSpot’s forum members have encountered a love/hate relationship with the French designer, who began her career at Chanel as an intern for haute couture embroidery in 1985 would be an understatement. Viard’s most recent collection for Cruise 2025 was staged in the port city of Marsielle in Southern France, with forum member Frederic01 commenting: “This is shockingly bad. Even by Virginie Viard’s standards. Emperor’s new clothes though, this will sell like hotcakes!”. Chanel product was indeed selling like hotcakes throughout 2023, with revenue increasing 16% to a staggering $19.7 billion. Evidently someone is doing something right.

Revisit the Cruise 2025 Chanel collection below:

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Their brand is too strong. 16% increase in sales. Virginie Viard is never leaving.” [plentyofthorns]

“I AM LIVING FOR THAT SALES INCREASE. It made laugh so hard at the gym. This is the product that all these morons who are buying Chanel deserve.” [helmutnotdead]

“These clients are lemmings, every one of them…” [StylishCynic]

“I mean, Chanel is more than Virginie’s collections. And even if I’m not a fan of her clothes and accessories, their beauty and jewelry entities are still consistent.” [Lola701]

“Wow +16% in 2023 is CRAZY. And double digit growth in RTW? What are Chanel clients smoking?” [Creative]

There’s something happening within Vogue‘s One World Trade HQ in New York and we 100% approve. Anna Wintour has ultimately been impressing us to no end via the American fashion bible’s front covers over recent months, with us racing down to the newsstand to collect our copies with Miuccia Prada, Coco Gauff and Zendaya on the front. Wintour invites an firm favorite back with the unveiling of the Summer 2024 edition (combining the months of June and July), giving Kendall Jenner her fourth official US Vogue cover appearance. To kick-start the warmer months ahead, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott whisk us off to Mexico for a sun-drenched cover shoot. In the sultry cover image (below), the current face of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein works a bra top and skirt from Chanel’s Spring 2024 Haute Couture collection – selected for the occasion by stylist Tabitha Simmons.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“I love, love the cover! It looks fresh, unexpected, and will definitely stand out on the shelves,” MModa praised.

“OK, I kinda love this! Not the biggest Kendall Jenner fan but I’ve always said Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott bring out the best in her, and this is even more proof. Absolutely love the cover. It’s sultry, sexy and ushers in summer perfectly,” applauded vogue28.

RanThe echoed the same sentiments, commenting: “Didn’t have Kendall on my vision board for an American Vogue cover, but I like it. I think she is truly her best when M&M are photographing her!”

Everyone else, however, was left completely unconvinced. “Ugh. We get ONE summer and it’s wasted on Kendall,” a disapproving Scotty exclaimed.

“Go, girl! Give us nothing!” declared forum member aguires.

“She really can’t model after 10 years. This girl exudes nothing,” critiqued GivenchyAddict.

“[Kendall Jenner] ‘on ten years of proving people wrong’. Not on theFashionSpot hun, not on theFashionSpot, laughed honeycombchild.

Out of all 28 editions of Vogue, Vogue Korea is most definitely one of our faves here at theFashionSpot. After all, thankfully for us, editor Shin Kwang-ho tends to favor models as the magazine’s cover stars. Everyone from Mariacarla Boscono and Naomi Campbell to Georgia Palmer and Vittoria Ceretti have graced the Korean fashion bible over recent months. Aside from models, make no mistake another one of Kwang-ho’s faves is Jennie Kim of the South Korean girl group Blackpink. Jennie is back as a Vogue Korea cover girl for May 2024, posing across a duo of collectable covers. A Chanel brand ambassador since 2017, the K-pop sensation wears a variety of pieces from Chanel’s Fine Jewelry Coco Crush collection in the dual cover images, lensed by photographer Kim Hee June.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“You can count on one hand the amount of actors and singers who can pose with jewelry. Jennie simply isn’t one of them. Also the K-pop industry needs to STOP with the colored contacts, they’re awful!” exclaimed forum member heyjaded.

“Nice as supplements covers. Not strong enough as main covers,” voiced Xone.

“Those Coco Crush bracelets seem to defy gravity. Very impressive for metal to float above your arm, or still be spaced out when you have your hands up,” tigerrouge pointed out.

Not everyone, however, was left so underwhelmed. “Both of the covers are beautiful in a subtle way. I like the first cover. The blues appeal to me,” admired MModa.

Karim Sadli’s photography has become synonymous with Chanel. As creative director of the fabled French fashion house, Virginie Viard has enlisted the Paris-based photographer to capture various Chanel campaign imagery. Sadli was tasked with photographing the Fall 2019 campaign (the late Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection) and has subsequently went on the capture models-of-the-moment for Cruise 2020 and Lily-Rose Depp for Cruise 2021 (to only name a few). After shooting last year’s eyewear campaign offering, the Harper’s Bazaar France regular is back for the 2024 installment, shooting models Loli Bahia, Liu Wen, Alaato Jazyper and América González against a sleek white backdrop for a series of classic and sharp portraits, selling Chanel’s latest 70s and 80s-inspired frames like there’s no tomorrow.

Sadli’s simplicity always works wonders for a brand like Chanel, and his photography style always feels like a breath of fresh air. The casting is superb. Not even dismal weather was enough to dampen the spirits of the fashion pack earlier today, as they descended upon Marseille to bare witness to Virginie Viard’s latest Chanel collection for the Cruise 2025 season. Models (including Viard muses Loli Bahia and Vivienne Rohner) roamed the rooftops of the ‘Cité Radieuse’ (a post-war residence built between 1947 and 1952 by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and one of Marseille’s most iconic buildings). Under blustery and gloomy skies, front row attendees like Lily-Rose Depp and Charlotte Casiraghi sat and watched as Viard’s lineup went by, with the storied French fashion house’s creative director inspired by every element the majestic port city in Southern France has to offer – the sun, architecture, music and dance. Hoodies were layered under pastel tweed suits, a number of chic swimwear pieces made an appearance, CC-clad scuba dresses too, and the knitwear seemed as light-as-air.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“This is shockingly bad. Even by Virginie Viard’s standards. Emperor’s new clothes though, this will sell like hotcakes!” [Frederic01]

“How does Virginie Viard still have a job? This is a performance based position in which you are judged on your ouput and every collection is seemingly worse than the last. The entire brand direction under her leadership has become tepid, uninspired, dowdy. They’re clothes for wealthy old ladies with no taste.” [signifier]

“I say it every time, but everything looks so HEAVY. How did Karl get everything (well… most things) to look so LIGHT?” [blueorchid]

“Next level tragic. It has to be difficult to come up with something as bad as this, not even on purpose, not even trying. The clothes are so ill-fitting.” [Creative]

“The weather felt as depressed and miserable with the show as I did.” [GERGIN]

“It’s really a talent to produce something so frumpy and ill-fitting while having access to the best atelier in the world. She is the worst when it it comes to proportions.” [avonlea002]

“Watching the livestream, I see that these clothes look even worse in motion. Everything fits/drapes so poorly: stiff when it’s supposed to be floaty, droopy when it’s supposed to be structured, botched proportions. Again, Virginie’s collections would work if she actually had a technical eye.” [LadyJunon]

As guests took their seats at Virginie Viard’s Fall 2024 Chanel showcase during Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, attendees were treated to a short film by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. Starring Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt, the cinematic piece was inspired by a scene from Claude Lelouch’s 1966 French movie Un Homme et Une Femme. As it turns out, the film is part of Chanel’s latest handbag advertising campaign for the fabled French fashion house’s iconic flap handbag – the 11.22. Staged in the Normandy seaside town of Deauville (which ultimately served as a focal point for Viard’s Fall 2024 collection), Penélope and Brad play the role of a pair of lovers. The cinematic duo are captured down on the beach, driving through the resort and inside the hotel’s restaurant throughout the charming campaign.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“The campaign seems cold. There is no chemistry, everything seems forced. To make matters worse, Brad did his job better than Penélope, who is one of the most beautiful women in the industry. Another MISS for I&V!” shared DK92 the moment the campaign struck.

Sharing the same attitude was justaguy: “I actually like the concept of this campaign, but those two have zero chemistry.”

“Almost anyone other than Brad would’ve been preferable,” chimed in KoV.

“Great concept, terrible execution,” wrote plentyofthorns.

“I guess this is how they announce that the flap bag now costs more than €10,000,” pointed out Br3ncon1.

Vogue28 stated: “I find Penélope Cruz just so unbelievably attractive and alluring that I cannot help but be like a moth to a flame, and instantly drawn to this. Brad and Penélope have great chemistry here, and I think it has been beautifully shot by I&V. My favorite are the he shots/scenes down on the beach.”

This time last year, Vanity Fair was bestowing upon us a sun-kissed Gisele Bündchen cover – which ultimately became one of theFashionSpot’s best magazine covers of the year.

Fast forward a whole twelve months and Vanity Fair‘s April 2024 offering is a vast departure from the sun-drenched beaches of Miami, with us on location within the surroundings of a plush New York townhouse. The magazine’s latest profiles Anne Hathaway as cover star, thirteen years after her last, when the American actress had the honor of gracing Vanity Fair‘s 2011 Hollywood issue. Reuniting with photographer Norman Jean Roy, Anne vamps is up throughout the dark and glamorous cover shoot, complete with styling from Deborah Afshani. The firm favorite of Donatella Versace gazes intensely down NJR’s lens in the commanding cover photograph, wearing a Chanel jacket, gloves and belt, latex bra from Atsuko Kudo and Bulgari jewelry.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Mixed feelings about the cover. The composition is good, Anne looks different than she usually appears, but for some reason the editing of the photo doesn’t look very Norman but something more Steven Klein,” voiced DK92 the moment the cover struck.

“I’m not buying her new ‘sexy’ image,” stated blueorchid.

In the same frame of mind was Bertrando3, who shared: “I don’t buy this either. It looks forced and not natural. She’s lovely when she’s doing relaxed glam but the femme fatale vibes don’t suit her!”

Yet not everyone was left so underwhelmed. “It’s a killer cover,” declared Alquimista.

“I love this, purely for how unexpected the styling is. This takes me back to a time when magazines weren’t afraid to give actresses a makeover and I’m all for it. Not the best I’ve seen Anne Hathaway styled or photographed but it’s ALL working,” shared vogue28.

LastNight praised: “Oh this is stunning. Always happy to see Anne on a cover – she’s so beautiful and clearly has fun with it!”

Seventeen issues into her tenure as editor of British ELLE, and Kenya Hunt continues to steer the magazine in the right direction. Mayowa Nicholas, Rosemary Ferguson, Lashana Lynch and Naomi Campbell have been secured by Hunt as cover stars over recent months, and now it’s Margaret Qualley’s turn as a British ELLE cover girl with the unveiling of the April 2024 installment. The American actress and undisputed favorite of Chanel’s Virginie Viard (having posed in a handful of advertising campaigns for the fabled French fashion house and even walked the haute couture show – twice) poses for photographer Tom Schirmacher. You’re right to assume stylist Patricia Villirillo selected a look from Chanel’s Spring 2024 collection for Qualley to wear in the fresh and nonchalant cover image – complete with Margaret wearing the Chanel ballet flats she wed Jack Antonoff in.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Margaret Qualley’s more recent magazine shoots seem to be selling a casual ‘I didn’t even brush my hair for this’ image. Not a fan of ‘not giving a f*ck’ covers. When things are low-effort, why should I care? I’d say French ELLE does it better, except her French ELLE cover was just the same,” voiced tigerrouge.

“She’s always styled the same in the most boring Chanel pieces,” chimed in gunsnroses.

Not everyone, however, was left so dissatisfied with the outcome. “I love how fresh and simple the cover is. I’ll always prefer a cover with the subject just being there and looking pretty. Instead of an over-emphasized art direction that tries to send a message or tell some story,” reasoned Srdjan.

“Much prefer this over last month’s Naomi Campbell cover! This feels more quintessential ELLE. Perhaps because this reminds me of something ELLE France is capable of, is the reason I’m so into this. All of this works for me – the fact its Margaret Qualley, the Chanel, the layout, the use of the pale green,” said vogue28.

Here at theFashionSpot, we believe there is a small selection of models and actresses magazines simply do not endorse as cover stars enough – and Tilda Swinton is one of them. Much to our delight, Vogue Thailand welcomes Swinton as their March 2024 cover star, and invited the celebrated British actress to pose for photographer and visual artist Harit Srikhao. Swinton traveled to the Thai city of Chiang Mai for the occasion, and posed for Srikhao on location within a tranquil and lush forest garden throughout the artistic cover shoot. In the cover photograph, Swinton poses against a backdrop featuring a painted landscape and as selected by stylist Jerry Stafford, wears a look from Chanel’s Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“US Vogue should stop ignoring her!” exclaimed ivano.

“This is cool,” rated forum member matheus_s.

Not everyone, however, was quick to praise Vogue Thailand’s seemingly best efforts. “Tilda is and looks specific (and is a great talent). So magazines always try something special, something over the top with her. Someone should do something simpler with her. For example, get her a quintessential British Harper’s Bazaar cover treatment,” wrote Srdjan.

“I’m sorry, but… I hate this,” chimed in blueorchid. “Tilda Swinton’s appeal is something to understand intellectually, but it all does nothing for me at the end of the day.”

“I love Tilda Swinton but this I hate. It’s so busy,” Ihhbl critiqued.

Also not feeling it was vogue28: “In all honesty, I’ve never understood the fascination with Tilda Swinton and genuinely couldn’t care less is she appears on a magazine cover again. Atrocious backdrop and amateur photography aside, Swinton looks lifeless and far beyond her years here. What an eyesore!”
