You can imagine our excitement and complete bewilderment, subsequent to a slew of deeply unimpressive covers starring Solange Knowles, Lana Del Rey and Leanne de Haan over recent months, when covers of Harper’s Bazaar with Regina King, Anok Yai and Christy Turlington began to rock our world. It appears, however, things are back to square one with the unveiling of Bazaar‘s depressing and lifeless-looking double June/July 2024 cover. Samira Nasr welcomes Emma Corrin as cover star for the occasion, who captured by photographer Sam Rock, is dressed by the mag’s newly-installed style director Carlos Nazario in a Miu Miu vest top and briefs (Miu Miu being, of course, a brand to which Corrin is brand ambassador).

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“This? After Regina and Anok’s successful covers? No, thank you,” crmsn immediately disapproved.

“Honestly, I was rooting so hard for American Harper’s Bazaar. I see we’re back to square one here. Dumbfounded over Samira Nasr expecting people to part with their hard-earned money for such an abysmal cover. Where’s the allure? Where’s the charm?” asked vogue28.

MModa wasn’t buying it either, declaring: “This dud of a cover sums up the editor’s aesthetic.”

Also deeply unimpressed was NYLA22, voicing: “When I see covers like this, it makes me think that editors are making magazines for themselves. Harper’s Bazaar is a mass, mainstream fashion publication and I don’t really know who this is for!”

“Was really hoping that woke fashion mag covers were finally behind us. Guess not,” sighed Handbag Queen.

“Honestly with a different look, it could have been lovely. This dull beige Miu Miu set is not helping,” commented forum member GivenchyAddict.

Is Carlos Nazario about to become the saving grace of Harper’s Bazaar? After a slew of unimpressive and deeply underwhelming covers, it’s sure starting to shape up that way, as the magazine’s newly-installed style director starts to implement his magic. Following a Regina King cover last month (declared Bazaar‘s “best cover” in years), the title’s annual issue dedicated to all-things beauty is here. Since taking up the mantle as editor, Samira Nasr has made it a tradition to feature models on the magazine’s May issues – and the year 2024 is no different. Nasr’s selections for May 2024 are Anok Yai and Christy Turlington, who pose for photographer Ethan James Green across a pair of flawless covers, both styled by Nazario. In cover one (below), Anok strikes a pose in a vest and skirt from Christian Dior while Christy is all smiles in a shearling coat and floral lace bodysuit from Saint Laurent (after the jump).

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“I’m so proud of Samira! A cover with someone SMILING on it!!! She’s getting there.” applauded blueorchid.

“WOW, Christy is bringing back the magic I need and used to love from fashion magazines in the 90s! She’s so glam, she looks perfect, amazing hair and makeup: very Revlon! This is what I want to see from fashion worldwide: models with personality, power, sex appeal and beauty,” enthused Bertrando3.

“Christy’s cover emits good energy but the cover with Anok is just flawless,” stated Srdjan.

“Anok’s cover is stunningly-beautiful with her makeup, making it a perfect fit for this beauty issue,” admired forum member Kenny.

Alquimista shared the same enthusiasm, adding: “Love everything. Beautiful covers and both models look radiant.”

“These two covers bring me so much LIFE! Absolutely living for Carlos Nazario at Harper’s Bazaar. Nazario has, without question, breathed some much-needed life back into the magazine. These two covers with Anok and Christy are both absolutely immaculate. I genuinely think I’d have a hard time down at the newsstand walking away with just one,” shared vogue28.

As editor of Harper’s Bazaar, Samira Nasr has definitely demonstrated she’s capable of securing the best of the best when it comes to selecting cover stars. We’ve encountered everyone from Jane Fonda to Beyoncé to Precious Lee to Imaan Hammam. Now Dr. Jill Biden appears on the freedom issue for June/July 2022. Photographed by Cass Bird and styled by Samira, the American educator stands on the steps of the Merchants’ Exchange Building in Philadelphia wearing a suit from Ralph Lauren (below) and greets customers at a local restaurant for the alternative cover (after the jump).

The covers failed to impress our forum members. “This cover is giving nothing. It’s so drab. Could they not have done a different background?” remarked BlueRuin.

“This will go right in the garbage,” proclaimed jal718.

“Awkward posing. The second image is a disaster,” disapproved Royal-Galliano.

Benn98 is far from impressed: “Can’t believe Cass Bird gets to shoot a first lady and this is the result. I like Jill Biden’s public image, but this cover is dull and the image is certainly not cover-worthy.”

“This is exactly why I am against putting politicians (first ladies included) on the covers of fashion magazines. They bring nothing to the table. Give them a feature inside and call it a day,” commented avonlea002.

“We should have a drinking game where you take a sip every time Samira signs off on a god-awful cover,” aracic pointed out.

“Don’t think it’s a bad photo of her, but it feels impersonal and the mixed messaging of the cover is odd,” noted KINGofVERSAILLES.

“The art direction makes this look more patriotic toward France (could even well be Brigitte Macron from afar),” stated vogue28.

There’s zero denying the fact that Samira Nasr has delivered some questionable covers at the helm of Harper’s Bazaar. (Like the ones starring Renée Zellweger, Nicole Kidman, Beyoncé and Gigi Hadid.) But make no mistake Bazaar‘s annual beauty issue ticks all the right boxes. In what appears to be a new tradition, the publication secures a handful of models for its May edition with this year’s lineup featuring Lauren Hutton, Jill Kortleve, Imaan Hammam and Sora Choi. The ladies each pose for individual covers captured by photographers Cass Bird, Josh Olins, Renell Medrano and Amy Troost respectively.

Naturally with multiple covers to choose from, one or two really stand out. “I must say it’s a very nice selection of covers. Although very detached from one another, each cover looks quite good… Imaan’s is an instant favorite,” voiced aracic.

“Appears that Bazaar‘s May covers are the only ones worth looking at! Always nice to see models make the covers of mainstream fashion titles regardless of the outcome. My two instant faves are Lauren Hutton and Imaan Hammam (who just always delivers)!” raved vogue28.

“What a lovely cast of models. Just fabulous to see Lauren Hutton, she is still as sparkling as ever. A true icon!” declared VogueParisMonAmour.

Everyone else, however, is underwhelmed. “Happy for them, but none got me excited!” noted DK92.

“Leave it to Samira Nasr to have an all-star cast look as boring as possible,” said SLFC.

“Imagine getting this cast together and then producing not a single memorable cover,” echoed KINGofVERSAILLES.

“There’s no soul,” critiqued a disapproving thiago:).

Our love/hate relationship with Samira Nasr continues with every issue of Harper’s Bazaar. Despite managing to secure A-list talent for the magazine’s front covers, we haven’t been thrilled with recent offerings featuring Venus and Serena Williams, Nicole Kidman and Beyoncé. Although we adored covers with Hunter Schafer and Tracee Ellis Ross. Now Renée Zellweger returns to the mag. The actress was last profiled for the publication way back in 2007. Renée rocks Louis Vuitton for cover one (below) and poses in Celine for cover two (after the jump) before the lens of photographer Mel Bles.

As usual, members of our forums aren’t sold. “Million times better than last month, but not good,” confessed caioherrero.

“Dreadful,” declared mikel.

“Samira Nasr’s styling is subpar, she should have let other better stylists do the job. I’ve already moved on from Samira. Her tenure feels like a wasted opportunity,” said THD96.

“And yet another case of a bad cover from Samira Nasr wasting all the potential of an interesting cover subject. Such a shame,” added aracic.

“My thoughts on Samira Nasr at the helm of Harper’s Bazaar remain unchanged with the unveiling of yet another series of dire covers. Another missed opportunity and another occasion in which I feel this magazine with such a rich history slipping away. A crying shame!” shared vogue28.

“Yikes. I’ll say it out loud: I miss Glenda Bailey. Give me ‘FABULOUS AT EVERY AGE‘ and ‘BEST BAGS & SHOES‘ with that plain generic background over this mess,” ranted MON.

“I love Renée Zellweger, but this isn’t working especially because of that horrible hairstyle. It’s vile, looks unwashed and as if she got out of bed and didn’t even bother to comb it,” an underwhelmed WAVES pointed out.

Since taking over the helm of Harper’s Bazaar back in 2020, Samira Nasr has managed to secure a plethora of A-list talent for the magazine’s front covers. We’ve encountered everyone from Jane Fonda to Gigi Hadid to Beyoncé to Tracee Ellis Ross with Hunter Schafer and Alana Haim greeting us recently. For Bazaar‘s annual legacy issue, the publication picks Venus and Serena Williams as cover stars with Nasr on styling duties for the Renell Medrano-shot March 2022 covers.

Unfortunately, the end result flopped. “I love both Venus and Serena, but this is not good. I miss Glenda Bailey,” declared caioherrero.

“Nothing is working here, the most beautiful thing so far is the bamboo growing behind them on the second cover,” said dontbeadrag.

“Without sounding like a broken record, I am officially done with Samira Nasr’s Harper’s Bazaar. What a depressing state she has the magazine in right now, especially with the covers, which are the main event. Covers lately are just lacking color, glamour and gloss,” critiqued vogue28.

“Sad to see a legendary fashion title destroyed over the last 20 years. You can’t believe it’s the same magazine that Liz Tilberis helped to build,” ivano pointed out.

“Horrific. Speechless. Stuff nightmares are made of. Doubling down on depressing moods and unflattering photography,” added PowerDroid.

“The first cover is just horrible and the second one isn’t much better. Bad angles, awkward expressions, bad lighting and the styling was a choice,” noted a far from impressed mepps.

Things appear to be shaping up over at Harper’s Bazaar. After questionable covers starring Gigi Hadid, Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman, there’s no denying the magazine needed some life injected into it. Over recent months, covers with Tracee Ellis Ross and Hunter Schafer have managed to somewhat impress. Now the title gives its February 2022 cover to Alana Haim. I must say that if there’s anything I appreciate about Samira Nasr’s tenure, it’s the unpredictable and unique choice of cover subjects each month. It’s refreshing,” approved aracic.

“I’m all for an unpredictable cover choice, but this cover just isn’t it and I’m unable to find a single element I like here — so weak, lifeless and rather depressing despite the feeling of warmth from the lighting. The sunflower prop is just…juvenile. Another dud of a Bazaar cover under Samira Nasr,” voiced vogue28.

“Can you imagine being given the reins of an institution with the legacy of Bazaar and being so meh about it? That’s what I get each and every month from Samira,” said A.D.C.

It’s no secret that due to the ongoing global health crisis, magazines have been hit hard. Despite the best efforts of editors to keep our favorite glossies afloat, there have been some changes. Which translated to historic moments down at newsstands when it came to 2021 magazine covers.

Condé Nast streamlined operations. Editions of Vogue now share content as a cost-cutting exercise resulting in some being left unable to produce localized content. Nevertheless, we encountered back-to-back British Vogue covers photographed by forum favorite Steven Meisel. Anna Wintour also appears to be shaking things up over at American Vogue with 14 of the magazine’s 20 cover stars never gracing the fashion bible before. Not to mention Emmanuelle Alt departing Vogue Paris on a high note with the unveiling of the title’s landmark 100th anniversary issue.

Meanwhile Samira Nasr continues to find her footing at American Harper’s Bazaar. Laura Brown’s InStyle remains one of the most buzzworthy publications. Michelle Lee helped Allure celebrate 30 years in print. At i-D, Alastair McKimm’s mission to reinstate the magazine as one of the most cutting-edge publications appears to be working.

From overuse of Photoshop on Madonna’s cover of V Magazine to Iman gracing British Harper’s Bazaar to diversity reigning supreme at British Vogue, here are the best and worst magazine covers of 2021.

US Harper’s Bazaar December 2021/January 2022 : Hunter Schafer by John EdmondsIt would be an understatement to say that throughout most of 2021, Harper’s Bazaar simply hasn’t been our go-to fashion title. It’s all thanks to a slew of unimpressive covers despite the presence of A-list talent like Nicole Kidman, Beyoncé and Jane Fonda. Now to close out the year, the publication welcomes Hunter Schafer for December 2021/January 2022. The end result took our forum members by surprise. “I like the colors,” admired mikel the moment the cover dropped. “This is the most exciting cover so far under Samira’s tenure. Hunter looks beautiful and what really sets it apart, for me, is that they didn’t go the obvious Euphoria route and instead they let her natural beauty take center stage,” appreciated KINGofVERSAILLES. “Samira finally knows how to saturate her covers. “This is undoubtedly my favorite cover under Samira…” proclaimed aracic. “Hunter my dear, finally! It was about time!” declared JPineapple. Not everyone shared the same level of enthusiasm, however. “What a bland cover,” voiced liberty33r1b. “Not a very flattering shot of Hunter,” an underwhelmed woemwoem pointed out. “I still don’t know where Samira wants to take this magazine,” said MON. “Despite the nice coloring, this still feels like just another glum and lifeless Harper’s Bazaar cover to add to the pile during Samira Nasr’s extremely tedious and uneventful tenure. I will, however, give Nasr major kudos for giving newsstands a wash of transgender representation,” added vogue28. See more from the cover shoot and share your thoughts here.

Samira Nasr has demonstrated she has some serious pull when it comes to scoring cover subjects for Harper’s Bazaar. After all, covers during her one-year tenure have featured everyone from Liya Kebede to Precious Lee to Beyoncé to Nicole Kidman. We guessed it was only a matter of time before the editor welcomed her BFF to the cover of the American fashion glossy and does just that for November 2021. Making her debut as a Bazaar cover star, Tracee Ellis Ross poses for photographer Renell Medrano and is styled by Samira for the occasion. The American actress and beauty mogul wears a billowing Balenciaga haute couture opera coat while holding a gigantic balloon for the eye-catching cover shot.

The end result took the majority of our forum members by surprise. “That’s a nice cover,” confessed mikel.

“I think it’s a beautiful cover and it will definitely pop on the newsstand. Tracee, I can take or leave, but I think she does have a genuine love of fashion…” said mepps.

“Perhaps my favorite cover under Samira so far…” admitted aracic.

“This cover is solid, kind of Tim Walker dragged down to earth and on a budget, but it’s the strongest cover shot from this lethargic trajectory of blandness that’s been the signature of Samira’s Bazaar for so long…” noted Phuel.

Not everyone, however, was buying it. “The photography is bland, the clothes hard to see, styling nonexistent,” disapproved ellastica.
