You can imagine our excitement and complete bewilderment, subsequent to a slew of deeply unimpressive covers starring Solange Knowles, Lana Del Rey and Leanne de Haan over recent months, when covers of Harper’s Bazaar with Regina King, Anok Yai and Christy Turlington began to rock our world. It appears, however, things are back to square one with the unveiling of Bazaar‘s depressing and lifeless-looking double June/July 2024 cover. Samira Nasr welcomes Emma Corrin as cover star for the occasion, who captured by photographer Sam Rock, is dressed by the mag’s newly-installed style director Carlos Nazario in a Miu Miu vest top and briefs (Miu Miu being, of course, a brand to which Corrin is brand ambassador).

“This? After Regina and Anok’s successful covers? No, thank you,” crmsn immediately disapproved.

“Honestly, I was rooting so hard for American Harper’s Bazaar. I see we’re back to square one here. Dumbfounded over Samira Nasr expecting people to part with their hard-earned money for such an abysmal cover. Where’s the allure? Where’s the charm?” asked vogue28.

MModa wasn’t buying it either, declaring: “This dud of a cover sums up the editor’s aesthetic.”

Also deeply unimpressed was NYLA22, voicing: “When I see covers like this, it makes me think that editors are making magazines for themselves. Harper’s Bazaar is a mass, mainstream fashion publication and I don’t really know who this is for!”

“Was really hoping that woke fashion mag covers were finally behind us. Guess not,” sighed Handbag Queen.

“Honestly with a different look, it could have been lovely. This dull beige Miu Miu set is not helping,” commented forum member GivenchyAddict.

Is Carlos Nazario about to become the saving grace of Harper’s Bazaar? After a slew of unimpressive and deeply underwhelming covers, it’s sure starting to shape up that way, as the magazine’s newly-installed style director starts to implement his magic. Following a Regina King cover last month (declared Bazaar‘s “best cover” in years), the title’s annual issue dedicated to all-things beauty is here. Since taking up the mantle as editor, Samira Nasr has made it a tradition to feature models on the magazine’s May issues – and the year 2024 is no different. Nasr’s selections for May 2024 are Anok Yai and Christy Turlington, who pose for photographer Ethan James Green across a pair of flawless covers, both styled by Nazario. In cover one (below), Anok strikes a pose in a vest and skirt from Christian Dior while Christy is all smiles in a shearling coat and floral lace bodysuit from Saint Laurent (after the jump).

#5 Vogue Italia December 2004 with Karen Elson by Steven Meisel:

While this cover may not exactly scream Christmas from the treetops, there’s no denying the cover shot oozes a certain holiday quality. Karen Elson posed for Steven Meisel and the duo achieved a romantically dark yet glamorous mood, as if Karen has just returned home from a fabulous New Year’s party and now sits alone reflecting on the handsome stranger she met. Meisel shot the redheaded British beauty wearing a black velvet Ralph Lauren gown, with Karen’s hair fashioned into old-Hollywood waves adding drama and charm to Italian Vogue‘s December 2024 cover.

#4 UK Vogue December 2007 with Sienna Miller by Nick Knight:

Nick Knight has created some overwhelmingly gorgeous British Vogue covers – most becoming instantly iconic. The magazine’s December 2007 cover may not be deemed iconic as of yet, but we certainly remember this particular cover shining bright like a diamond on the newsstand during the festive period of 2007. Sienna Miller showcased a stunning metallic gown by Dolce & Gabbana, looking ready for the party season ahead, posing alongside a quirky prop. The silver metallic fonts added pizazz once viewed in real life and we’ll be hunting out our copies today to get us in the festive spirit!

#3 Vogue Paris December 2001/January 2002 with Kate Moss by Mario Testino:

This cover just screams Christmas from the onset. Kate Moss graced the last double-issue of 2001 for French Vogue with Mario Testino capturing everyone’s favorite British supermodel with a set of holiday fairy lights wrapped around her head – with wonderful results! The cover, in theory, sounds rather cheesy (but aren’t holidays supposed to be cheesy?) yet Testino, Carine Roitfeld and Kate pulled the concept off perfectly. Holidays but make it fashion and we 100% approve.

#2 Vogue Russia December 2008 with Naomi Campbell by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott:

Yet another cover that screams of the holiday season, although the December 2008 cover of Vogue Russia took a more luxurious approach this time around. The magazine tapped Naomi Campbell as its cover subject and got creative twosome Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott to photograph the sitting, opting to shoot Naomi draped in a luxurious white fur that cascaded around her structured face as she gazed down M&M’s lens. With a minimal amount of text and a subtle pink masthead, we’d say this cover is pretty much right on the money for December.

#1 Harper’s Bazaar December 1992 with Kate Moss by Patrick Demarchelier:

A golden oldie, a forgotten favorite and a clear winner. Kate Moss wows us on the December 1992 issue of American Harper’s Bazaar. Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, a then 18-year-old Kate posed wearing an extravagant red Christian Dior haute couture gown, hair and makeup done to the nines, while holding a Christmas snow globe. Simple, effective and completely understated, we ask the current team of Bazaar to please take note. This is how a festive fashion magazine cover is truly done!

Ever since the magazine relaunched back in March 2023, we have been living for Harper’s Bazaar France. Can you blame us? Complete with Olivier Lalanne as editor, covers with Rianne van Rompaey, Imaan Hammam, Eva Herzigova and Laetitia Casta have blown us away (not to mention last month’s sublime offering starring Catherine Deneuve) and with the October 2023 edition, the French fashion title soars to new heights.
As the French fashion glossy unveils its latest, the fashion industry’s affection for Amelia Gray only continues to grow. The American model’s portfolio currently boasts a blue-chip campaign for Miu Miu and magazine covers for V Magazine and Vogue Japan. Now a Harper’s Bazaar France cover girl, Amelia can be found posing before the lens of Karim Sadli and brings some serious retro glamour to not one but two sensational covers. In cover one (below), Amelia is captured in Sadli’s signature black and white, posing topless wearing a flower-embroidered Prada skirt and a hat from the archives designed by Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga. For the second alternative cover (after the jump), stylist Élodie David-Touboul dressed Amelia in a felt hat and plastic visor from Pierre Cardin, in addition to a nylon cape from Coperni.

Unsurprisingly, members of theFashionSpot forums were left in awe. “Looove this,” raved Ihhbl at once.
“This is good, Bazaar for the win,” heralded zoom.
“It is absolutely AMAZING to see a French fashion title rise to the occasion and leave Vogue France in the shade. Harper’s Bazaar France has undeniably risen to the occasion, and each and every cover they produce is just as gorgeous as the last. In the same frame of mind was NYLA22: “I love it. I never use this word, but this cover is so CHIC. It’s shocking to see beautiful covers amid all of the mediocrity coming from various Vogues around the world.”
“I really love what French Bazaar has been doing. The only fashion magazine I’m subscribed to at the moment. Love the layout, restraint, and the visual consistency throughout each issue,” applauded violetcai0802.

Lydia Slater often surprises us with models on the front covers of British Harper’s Bazaar. This year alone, we’ve encountered covers starring Karen Elson and Cara Delevingne. Now Birgit Kos appears on the title’s double offering for July/August 2022. Captured by photographer Yulia Gorbachenko with styling from Sandy Armeni, the Dutch model rocks cropped hair plus an Eres swimsuit teamed with a pair of Chanel earrings while posing on the rocks of the Greek island of Milos.

The cover received mixed feedback on our forums. “Beautiful and quite nostalgic,” admired crmsnsnwflks.

“Birgit looks stunning! It’s very Bazaar. I like it!” approved annikad.

“I love the cover! Perfect for the summer and I’m glad to see British Bazaar move from its gardens to the beach this month,” aracic pointed out.

“Beautiful. Birgit is the Linda Evangelista of her generation. I love her,” proclaimed avonlea002.

“A perfectly fine cover, but feels somewhat out of left field for British Harper’s Bazaar. I do appreciate model covers now and again and I’ve always been a fan of Birgit Kos. The cropped hair reminds me of Linda Evangelista and the colors and composition are lovely!” voiced vogue28.

Although not everyone is thrilled. “Pretty but very generic,” noted BlueRuin.

“Not bad. But I don’t like Birgit’s hair color,” said mikel.

“The hair totally ruins it,” declared liberty33r1b.

As editor of Harper’s Bazaar, Samira Nasr has definitely demonstrated she’s capable of securing the best of the best when it comes to selecting cover stars. We’ve encountered everyone from Jane Fonda to Beyoncé to Precious Lee to Imaan Hammam. Now Dr. Jill Biden appears on the freedom issue for June/July 2022. Photographed by Cass Bird and styled by Samira, the American educator stands on the steps of the Merchants’ Exchange Building in Philadelphia wearing a suit from Ralph Lauren (below) and greets customers at a local restaurant for the alternative cover (after the jump).

The covers failed to impress our forum members. “This cover is giving nothing. It’s so drab. Could they not have done a different background?” remarked BlueRuin.

“This will go right in the garbage,” proclaimed jal718.

“Awkward posing. The second image is a disaster,” disapproved Royal-Galliano.

Benn98 is far from impressed: “Can’t believe Cass Bird gets to shoot a first lady and this is the result. I like Jill Biden’s public image, but this cover is dull and the image is certainly not cover-worthy.”

“This is exactly why I am against putting politicians (first ladies included) on the covers of fashion magazines. They bring nothing to the table. Give them a feature inside and call it a day,” commented avonlea002.

“We should have a drinking game where you take a sip every time Samira signs off on a god-awful cover,” aracic pointed out.

“Don’t think it’s a bad photo of her, but it feels impersonal and the mixed messaging of the cover is odd,” noted KINGofVERSAILLES.

“The art direction makes this look more patriotic toward France (could even well be Brigitte Macron from afar),” stated vogue28.

We’ve been huge fans of Luna Bijl ever since she first burst on the scene and landed the cover of Vogue Paris (twice within three months). Campaigns for Chanel and covers of Vogue Germany, Vogue Netherlands, Vogue China and Vogue Ukraine have captivated us to no end. Now she pops up on Harper’s Bazaar Spain for June 2022 captured by photographer Xavi Gordo. For the four collectible covers, the Dutch beauty wears pieces from Paco Rabanne’s Fall 2022 collection, which makes sense since she’s the face of the brand’s Olympéa fragrance.

Needless to say, members of our forums were ecstatic. “Stunning! Luna never disappoints,” applauded Urban Stylin.

“Oh, how lovely it is to see Luna again! The Paco Rabanne fantasy is everything and although the masthead was a choice, it isn’t too distracting. More often than not you can count on Spanish Bazaar to deliver and they did,” raved aracic.

“Beautiful, it’s giving the vibes of a 60s cover with vintage Paco Rabanne,” admired lovelylavender.

VogueGirl8910 shared the same sentiment: “Stunning covers, agree that these photos are a beautiful tribute to Veruschka and Franco Rubartelli’s work.”

“Glorious! All four covers are superb, but that profile shot of Luna Bijl with the Paco Rabanne headpiece is the standout (should’ve been the only cover), very reminiscent of American Harper’s Bazaar under Diana Vreeland and I’m here for it. The art direction is superb!” exclaimed vogue28.

Now Rose Leslie makes her debut as a Bazaar cover star for June 2022 posing for Alexi Lubomirski on the grounds of England’s historic Syon Park. The actress wears an Alberta Ferretti Pre-Fall 2022 dress chosen by Miranda Almond for the charming cover image.

Most of the members of our forums like what they see. “I love Rose Leslie. This is beautiful,” admired caioherrero.

“What a lovely cover. It looks regal and clean,” crmsnsnwflks chimed in.

“Kinda feels more Tatler than Bazaar, but it’s still very on-brand. I like it!” approved aracic.

“Another winner of a British Harper’s Bazaar cover! I had to google Rose Leslie, but she looks lovely here as I would expect from a photographer like Alexi Lubomirski. Miranda Almond’s styling is perfect, very elegant and classy,” applauded vogue28.

There’s zero denying the fact that Samira Nasr has delivered some questionable covers at the helm of Harper’s Bazaar. (Like the ones starring Renée Zellweger, Nicole Kidman, Beyoncé and Gigi Hadid.) But make no mistake Bazaar‘s annual beauty issue ticks all the right boxes. In what appears to be a new tradition, the publication secures a handful of models for its May edition with this year’s lineup featuring Lauren Hutton, Jill Kortleve, Imaan Hammam and Sora Choi. The ladies each pose for individual covers captured by photographers Cass Bird, Josh Olins, Renell Medrano and Amy Troost respectively.

Naturally with multiple covers to choose from, one or two really stand out. “I must say it’s a very nice selection of covers. Although very detached from one another, each cover looks quite good… Imaan’s is an instant favorite,” voiced aracic.

“Appears that Bazaar‘s May covers are the only ones worth looking at! Always nice to see models make the covers of mainstream fashion titles regardless of the outcome. My two instant faves are Lauren Hutton and Imaan Hammam (who just always delivers)!” raved vogue28.

“What a lovely cast of models. Just fabulous to see Lauren Hutton, she is still as sparkling as ever. A true icon!” declared VogueParisMonAmour.

Everyone else, however, is underwhelmed. “Happy for them, but none got me excited!” noted DK92.

“Leave it to Samira Nasr to have an all-star cast look as boring as possible,” said SLFC.

The magazine regularly makes use of shooting on location during the warmer months with select A-list talent, including Rachel Weisz and Keira Knightley. Now the publication transports us to Paris with actress Alicia Vikander for May 2022. Captured under clear blue skies, the Louis Vuitton brand ambassador wears an embellished look from the French fashion house’s Spring 2022 collection before the lens of Betina du Toit.

The cover received mixed reactions on our forums, however. “Pretty cover, but I’ll always be surprised at how poorly Alicia’s beauty translates in photoshoots. She’s absolutely gorgeous, but I think the only cover of hers I’ve ever really liked is her first U.S. Vogue one by David Sims,” voiced LastNight.

“When I think I’ve seen her worst, bam, I’m proven wrong. ATROCIOUS,” declared WAVES.

Although not everyone felt the same way. “I actually don’t mind this, especially considering what Alicia has produced in the past,” confessed Urban Stylin.

“For me, this feels like a return to form for British Harper’s Bazaar! The sight of such a pretty, delicate and season-appropriate cover is a much-welcomed sight and feels somewhat reminiscent of what Porter used to produce. I love it — Alicia as cover star included,” approved vogue28.
