Vogue Italia is one of those fashion magazines with an immense legacy (all thanks to the sheer brilliance of the late great Franca Sozzani). Since Sozzani’s passing, the Italian fashion bible has underwent some significant changes and is undoubtedly a shadow of its former self. From 2017 to 2021, Emanuele Farneti served as editor-in-chief, who was ultimately replaced with Francesca Ragazzi (the magazine’s current head of editorial content). Covers throughout Ragazzi’s reign have been extremely hit and miss – with last month’s Bella Hadid offering feeling like a total missed opportunity. For May 2024, Ragazzi welcomes Irina Shayk as cover girl, marking the Russian beauty’s third since 2017. The industry fave takes it to the racetrack, to the home of Ferrari in the Italian commune of Maranello to be exact. Throughout 2023, a select few of Porodina’s accomplishments involved commissions to capturing the covers of Vogue Spain (twice) as well as Vogue China Beauty and bagged campaigns for mega fashion brands such as Carolina Herrera and Giorgio Armani. Starting off the new year on a high, Porodina’s first gig for 2024 is the cover of Vogue Italia. The magazine’s head of editorial content Francesca Ragazzi welcomes Benedetta Porcaroli as cover girl, who fronts the January 2024 edition. In the artistic cover image which evokes the work of American artist John Singer Sargent, the Italian actress is dressed by stylist Vittoria Cerciello in one of the translucent chiffon dresses from Prada’s Spring 2024 collection.

For December 2023, Ragazzi enlists firm forum fave Liya Kebede to pose via the lens of photographer Campbell Addy. Against a festive red backdrop, the Ethiopian-born beauty is decked out in Fendi by stylist Ally Macrae, with the floor-length knitted look teamed with a pair of shoes from 19 09 SR.

Per usual, the all-important question remained: were members of theFashionSpot forums a happy bunch upon checking out the cover? “I love it! The red they have used is so beautiful,” admired callmejaeden.

“I love it. The color scheme, the composition, the execution of the theme, Liya…” kokobombon shared.

“I love Liya, I love the color red… do I love the sight of her holding a giant set of balls? Why not, it’s Christmas,” commented forum member tigerrouge.

“The grey masthead teamed with the red backdrop immediately reminded me of Vogue Italia’s January 2003 cover with Elise Crombez by Steven Meisel. This flops in comparison, but at the very least, there’s a slight hint of the festive season ahead with the red overload,” noted vogue28.

“What a joy to see Liya Kebede back on the cover of Vogue Italia again. But that hair…” shrieked mikel.

Also quick to point out the questionable hairstyle was blueorchid, stating: “Can you imagine deciding THAT is the best wig for Liya?”

Anna Ewers is a firm industry fave, and ever since scoring her very first cover of Vogue almost a whole 10 years ago via the lens of Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia’s December 2013 issue – Anna makes a return to the Italian fashion glossy’s front cover for November 2023. Throughout her remarkable career as a high-fashion model, the German native has covered just about every edition of Vogue from British to French and German to Japanese. Anna’s 27th Vogue cover sees the current face of Chanel pose for photographer Bruno Staub, with Malina Joseph Gilchrist on styling duties. In the nonchalant and laidback cover image, Anna smiles down Staub’s lens rocking a mashup of Saint Laurent and Gucci, as she takes five outside with a beverage.

Members of theFashionSpot, however, believed Anna deserved FAR better. “You can literally come across that kind of photo on someone’s Instagram. What a waste of Anna,” cried out crmsn.

“I miss the days when a Vogue image showing the back end of a building or dirty alleyway would be a celebration of louche nightlife, not someone having a hot beverage while sitting beside a sewer manhole,” voiced tigerrouge.

“No thought went into this shot at all, and it’s certainly not inspiring,” noted a disapproving woemwoem.

Forum member Polynpon wasn’t feeling it either, commenting: “I miss the days of high-fashion and real glamour on the cover of Vogue!”

“A total waste of Anna Ewers, and after a very quick Google search, this is perhaps my least fave Vogue cover of hers. Far too raw, pedestrian, insipid, lackluster and uninspiring for my taste. How the magazine is expectant of potential new readership being engrossed by this cover is beyond me…” said vogue28.

For Italian Vogue‘s October 2023 installment, Ragazzi welcomes Isabella Rossellini as cover star, who at 71-years-old is a Vogue cover girl once again. Captured by photographer Zhong Lin and with Tati Cotliar on styling duties, the iconic Italian actress and long-serving Lancôme brand ambassador goes completely unretouched in the beautiful portrait cover shot, fronting Vogue Italia’s latest wearing Valentino.

The cover immediately caught the attention of our forum members. “I think it’s a beautiful portrait of an icon. A very British Vogue cover IMO,” pointed out fangora.
“This is actually lovely,” admired MON.
“Just beautiful,” VERNIQUE echoed.
Forum member crmsnsnwflks was also an admirer, commenting: “If this is the start of Vogue Italia’s collaboration with talented Chinese photographers, then I’m all for it. The cover is really gorgeous; it’s like an oil painting from the renaissance era.”

We’ve seen and digested the bulk of the September issues by now, and in all fairness our favorite fashion glossies have been good to us in terms of using fashion models as their cover stars (because believe us, it has started to become a rarity). American and British Vogue both secured the sensational 90s supermodels for their covers while British Harper’s Bazaar supported Asian representation with a Soo Joo Park cover (and lest we forget V Magazine‘s whopping model extravaganza). Vogue Italia has tapped a rising of star within the world of modeling for their September 2023 installment, which sees Angelina Kendall become cover girl. Photographed by Carlijn Jacobs and styled by Imruh Asha in a sleeveless pale yellow dress from Prada’s Fall 2023 collection, the Brazilian-Australian beauty sports a blunt red bob in the intriguing fold-out cover image.

The cover took our forum members by complete surprise but perhaps not in the best way. “It’s an interesting concept I guess but I’m not gobsmacked over it,” noted WAVES.
“Carlijn is a technically strong photographer, but she is no visionary image-maker. Imruh is unfortunately just as directionless with his styling and the result, much like the gimmicky AI cover with Bella Hadid earlier this year, isn’t great,” shared WinstonH20.
“It’s ridiculous and looks like a mess. NEXT!” an unamused Bertrando3 declared.
Also far from overjoyed at the sight of the cover was avonlea002: “Already sick of Jacobs’ gimmicky photography. This magazine is dead.”
“What a joke…” chimed in MaraPiovani.
Yet not everyone was left so dissatisfied. “I like the cover, I don’t mind if it’s a gimmicky cover, fashion sometimes needs that,” Xone reasoned.
