The 2024 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival is still ablaze down on the French Riviera, with the glitzy resort town having hosted a whole multitude of cinema stars, outstanding filmmakers and legends of the industry since Tuesday, May 14 (and the highly-anticipated closing ceremony is set to take place tomorrow). To say the past few days have provided an absolute masterclass in red carpet dressing would be an understatement. Many of the A-list attendees have adored the iconic Cannes Film Festival red carpet in ultra-glamorous creations from the world’s most prestigious couture houses, while some (like Naomi Campbell) have unearthed looks from the archives.

From Bella Hadid proving to be the ultimate queen of Cannes donning a dramatic black Versace gown from the Italian fashion house’s Spring 2001 couture collection to this year’s jury president Greta Gerwig ascending the steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrèso having a full-on Barbiecore moment dressed in a Balenciaga couture confection – here’s even more standout style moments from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival:

Following his inaugural collection and campaign offering as Fendi’s womenswear creative director back in Fall 2021, Kim Jones has favored photographer Craig McDean to capture his mainline fashion collections for the Italian fashion house. The bond between the two remains as strong as ever, with McDean welcomed back with open arms for the Fall 2023 season to lens his fifth campaign installment for the ultra-luxe label. This season, however, we witness a switch-up in the casting as models Rianne Van Rompaey, Julia Nobis, Mona Tougaard, Yilan Hua, Migoa Majoang and Farah Nieuwburg take center stage showcasing Jones’ latest designs in the series of studio-shot images, with styling from Jones’ long-time collaborator friend Melanie Ward.

Members of our forum members, were soon deliberating over every pixel. “Everyone in this campaign looks less than thrilled to be in such close proximity to those bags,” laughed RMDV.
“Where they all drunk when shooting this?” asked avonlea002.
“What a sad and gloomy campaign…” sighed a disapproving Lola701.
Also left majorly underwhelmed was TaylorBinque, complaining: “I am sorry but this is not Fendi. Kim Jones literally sucked the soul out of the brand and left us with this unimaginative boring catalogue. Like seriously, he needs to go!”
“A nice Bergdorf Goodman collection catalogue… yawn! The amount of people that gets paid to come up with this mediocrity is astonishing,” called out an unforgiving FashionPower.
“Kim Jones just needs to desperately ditch Craig McDean as Fendi’s campaign photographer in all honesty, because they’ve ALL been a complete flop after Spring 2022. I’m usually a one for studio shoots but McDean’s Fendi campaigns have become so lifeless and static that it’s laughable (and painful to digest at the same time),” voiced vogue28.

2022 Cannes International Film Festival

After skipping 2020 and scaling back for 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival is back in full force. Which is great for us since it usually produces fashion moments on par with the Met Gala and the Oscars. Although we have to admit, a decent amount of looks were relatively lackluster.

When it comes to designers, certain ones reigned supreme. We witnessed several dresses from Valentino’s Fall 2022 offering, aka the pink collection, take to the red carpet. Sharon Stone stuck with Dolce & Gabbana probably because she stars in the Italian fashion house’s new handbag campaign. As usual, there were plenty of haute couture looks to go around. Fendi, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior and Chanel are just a small sampling. Custom creations were also trending with Cara Delevingne’s revealing Balmain gown one of the standouts.

The jewelry was also something to behold. Especially when it came to necklaces. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta dress was amplified by Bulgari’s Eden The Garden of Wonders necklace, for example.

On the beauty front, hair really turned heads. Bella Hadid’s wet-look hairdo with sculpted strands in the middle of her forehead really made a statement. As did Grace Elizabeth’s piecey pixie.

Keep reading to see all the must-see looks from the premieres at the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival.

For over three decades as Max Mara’s creative director, Ian Griffiths has selected Steven Meisel to lens the majority of the brand’s advertising campaigns. They’ve included everyone from Gigi Hadid to Faretta to Fei Fei Sun to Joan Smalls with last season’s offering celebrating the 70th anniversary of Max Mara. The legendary lensman returns for Spring 2022 with Carine Roitfeld back on styling duties. Loli Bahia, Yilan Hua, Anok Yai and Vittoria Ceretti pose in the studio showcasing the fashion house’s latest collection.

Members of our forums, however, expected more. “I’m missing some movement in the poses,” voiced mikel. “If ‘go on girl give us nothing’ was a campaign. I get that Max Mara loves their simple no-concept campaigns, but the clothes actually have to look desirable for that to work,” KINGofVERSAILLES chimed in. “This is terrible. Weak photography aside, there is nothing desirable about this duty-free styling,” critiqued THD96.

“The only campaign images I’m able to tolerate are the ones cropped a little closer (like the one of Vittoria Ceretti wearing the navy outfit). There’s just no life, movement or pizzazz radiating from the full-length images,” explained an underwhelmed vogue28. “This is really bad coming from Meisel…” confessed zacatecas570. “Vittoria looks dry and washed out. That hair color is a disaster,” added GivenchyHomme. “I loved Vittoria’s hair on the runway, but apparently it doesn’t translate to print…not Max Mara’s best,” admitted aracic. But not everyone shared the same sentiment. “I don’t get the dislike. All I see is a rather stunning Max Mara campaign… Yes it’s basic, but it’s Meisel basic, which I’ve always liked,” approved Benn98.

Craig McDean appears to be a favorite of Kim Jones with the designer welcoming back the photographer for a second time to lens Fendi’s latest campaign. Following Jones’ highly-anticipated debut campaign for Fendi last season, McDean and stylist Melanie Ward reunite for retro-inspired Fendi Spring 2022 ads. Barbara Valente, Anok Yai, Rianne Van Rompaey, Yilan Hua and Vittoria Ceretti pose for a series of photographs evoking a playful spirit and a modern take on disco glamour.

The end result divided our forums. “Looks very good!” approved mikel.

“Vittoria and Yilan turned out to be the best part of this campaign. It could’ve been just the two of them. Love it,” proclaimed WAVES.

“This is shaping up to be my favorite campaign of the season… It’s just so vibrant, colorful and joyous. All the girls are working it, but Rianne Van Rompaey may just be outshining everyone else here,” raved vogue28.

Nomar felt the same way: “I can’t deny this is eye-catching, the colors are so vibrant that it stands out amongst what a lot of other brands are producing.”

But not everyone agreed. “Much like the collection itself…this campaign was a good idea (with the styling and soft color palette), but it’s hideously executed. The models look inebriated and not in a good way!” called out YohjiAddict.

“That group shot is awful. America’s Next Top Model-level mess,” disapproved avonlea002.

“Everything about this looks seriously trashy and cheap: the art direction, the styling, the composition, etc. Heck, even Michael Kors has better campaigns than this!” declared Frederic01.

We tend to hear bad news along with good news when it comes to runway diversity. (Just take a look at any of our Diversity Reports.) This season, the top models list is no exception. That’s because while a woman of color tops the list of top models for Fashion Month Fall 2020, only four women of color (top model included) earned a spot.

Did any top models from New York make the cut?

Several models from our top models of New York Fall 2020 countdown popped back up, as expected. Sora Choi, Lara Mullen, Cyrielle Lalande, Josefine Lynderup, Yilan Hua and Hannah Motler all reappeared.

Are there any new faces?

There are a few fresh faces to the top models of Fall 2020 list. Rachel Marx racked up lots of runway miles in all four fashion capitals. Netherlands native Felice Noordhoff only walked for Burberry in London, but killed it everywhere else. After this season, Chinese beauty Tang He’s runway résumé is looking pretty tight. And Achenrin Madit came out of nowhere to dominate the field.

Now that your curiosity is piqued, check out the slideshow above to see which models are on the top models list. You’ll definitely be (pleasantly) surprised.

While we’re already well underway over in Milan, we’ve still got a bit of New York Fashion Week business to take care of. We’ve already covered the top trends, the best beauty looks and our forum members’ favorite and least favorite shows so what’s left? Counting down the top models, of course. For Fall 2020, only four of the top 12 models in the Big Apple were women of color. Pretty disappointing, we know. But there were some familiar faces. Street style maven Sora Choi tops the list with an incredible list of big-name shows (she even opened Vera Wang and closed Tory Burch). Texas’ own Sara Grace Wallerstedt racked up 10 shows, including Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors Collection and Anna Sui. And French stunner Cyrielle Lalande once again finds herself in top model company. Technically, there was a five-way tie for second and a seven-way tie for first. But we chose to break those ties by taking into consideration openings and closings and who walked for the most high-profile fashion houses. Ready to see which models scored the top spots at New York Fashion Week? Check out the slideshow above to see who earned the most runway miles. And make sure you check back next month to see how many of them also appear on our top models of Fashion Month Fall 2020 tally.
