The 2024 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival is still ablaze down on the French Riviera, with the glitzy resort town having hosted a whole multitude of cinema stars, outstanding filmmakers and legends of the industry since Tuesday, May 14 (and the highly-anticipated closing ceremony is set to take place tomorrow). To say the past few days have provided an absolute masterclass in red carpet dressing would be an understatement. Many of the A-list attendees have adored the iconic Cannes Film Festival red carpet in ultra-glamorous creations from the world’s most prestigious couture houses, while some (like Naomi Campbell) have unearthed looks from the archives.

From Bella Hadid proving to be the ultimate queen of Cannes donning a dramatic black Versace gown from the Italian fashion house’s Spring 2001 couture collection to this year’s jury president Greta Gerwig ascending the steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrèso having a full-on Barbiecore moment dressed in a Balenciaga couture confection – here’s even more standout style moments from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival:

2022 Cannes International Film Festival

After skipping 2020 and scaling back for 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival is back in full force. Which is great for us since it usually produces fashion moments on par with the Met Gala and the Oscars. Although we have to admit, a decent amount of looks were relatively lackluster.

When it comes to designers, certain ones reigned supreme. We witnessed several dresses from Valentino’s Fall 2022 offering, aka the pink collection, take to the red carpet. Sharon Stone stuck with Dolce & Gabbana probably because she stars in the Italian fashion house’s new handbag campaign. As usual, there were plenty of haute couture looks to go around. Fendi, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior and Chanel are just a small sampling. Custom creations were also trending with Cara Delevingne’s revealing Balmain gown one of the standouts.

The jewelry was also something to behold. Especially when it came to necklaces. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta dress was amplified by Bulgari’s Eden The Garden of Wonders necklace, for example.

On the beauty front, hair really turned heads. Bella Hadid’s wet-look hairdo with sculpted strands in the middle of her forehead really made a statement. As did Grace Elizabeth’s piecey pixie.

Keep reading to see all the must-see looks from the premieres at the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival.

If you’re planning to watch the MTV Movie & TV Awards tonight at 9:00 p.m. EDT, we’ve got a little preview. Though we don’t have the inside track on all the winners, what we do have might just be better — a look at all the red carpet action. The show was actually filmed over the weekend, so the stars already stepped out in their red carpet finest. While there were several scene-stealing red carpet looks at this year’s show, they were pretty much upstaged by the elaborate hairdos. From an oversized sheer black bow to cornrows to a sky-high pony to bedazzled bobby pins, the ‘dos drew the focus upward. Eye makeup was also competing for attention with colorful eyeshadow and reimagined smoky eyes proving popular. On the fashion front, red and black were trending. We also saw quite a few see-through looks, suits and blazer dresses (both long and short versions). And lots of stars opted to shine at the ceremony decked out in sequins, embellished footwear and statement earrings, usually in drop form. For all the fashion and hair highlights from the awards, check out the slideshow above.

While there were gorgeous gowns aplenty at last night’s CFDA Fashion Awards, suits were trending in a major way. From conventional tuxes with a touch of sparkle to deconstructed versions showing a lot of skin, numerous attendees suited up for the ceremony. There was also quite a bit of color at the annual awards. Gigi Hadid practically supplied every shade imaginable in her bold Versace ensemble. But we also saw lots of reds, blues, greens, pinks and yellows outside of her outfit. A handful of stars opted for black but those looks came with little details like embellishments, pops of pinstripes, lace and lace-up detailing to ensure they were anything but basic.

See who won awards below and see who came out on top on the fashion front in the slideshow above.

There were definitely some consistent themes at this year’s epic Met Gala. With the party celebrating the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibit, attendees offered their penance in the form of veils, crosses and headpieces galore. Yellows, reds and golds also proved popular for this secular celebration. As is usually the case, a few stars took things to the extreme. Rihanna transformed herself into a pope, Zendaya channeled Joan of Arc, Katy Perry looked like she was auditioning for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and Madonna reteamed with Jean Paul Gaultier for a more solemn spin. For all the fashion highlights (trust us, there’s a ton), check out the slideshow above.

Our forum members are often quite hard on the American edition of Marie Claire but over the past few months, the magazine has delivered some seriously strong covers featuring the likes of Hailee Steinfeld and Reese Witherspoon — and even managed to do Alicia Vikander justice. After finally receiving our forum’s seal of approval, the publication unveils a bold new look with its annual ‘Fresh Faces‘ issue for May 2018. The cover girls include Riley Keough, Katherine Langford, Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Sophie Turner, all photographed by Erik Madigan Heck and styled by Joseph Errico for a series of vibrant portraits.

Our forum members weighed in on which covers they’ll be tracking down. “Riley’s got the best cover, and maybe the third girl if they ditched the unnecessary jacket (below, center). The rest are really too much. Art direction is overwhelming, and while I love Erik’s work for UK Harper’s Bazaar, it’s just not working for me here,” commented Benn98.

“I’m thrilled to see Issa Rae!” TheoG applauded.

Forum member Nocturnal wasn’t exactly jumping for joy over the series of covers: “I don’t know them. They look boring!”

“Not one but FIVE boring and generic covers!” scolded Nomar.

“Riley is a fresh face? Please! She gets far more attention than her work is worth. Also, the art direction on these covers make my head hurt,” wrote ThatDudeOverTher.

Also quick to call out the magazine for its new art direction was MON: “Vogue Paris wants her font back!”

“That VP font that every magazine seems to be adopting doesn’t work here – it looks rather cheap in fact. There’s just a bit too much going on,” 333101 pointed out.

The Fall 2018 runways were glitz central.

If recent runways are to be believed, maximalists can rejoice. That’s because countless designers decided to bring the 80s back for Fall 2018, from the strong shoulders at Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Gareth Pugh to the glitzy animal prints at Tom Ford and Halpern. And you can forget that whole no-makeup makeup trend — eyes were outlined in a rainbow of shades (especially blue) with Gigi Hadid even decked out in a beauty look at Anna Sui inspired by a picture of the designer in the 80s. Red lips and glitter were also popular, making us flash back to the decade of excess.

The Fall 2018 runways were glitz central.
Michael Kors Fall 2018, Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2018, Simone Rocha Fall 2018; Images: Imaxtree

When it came to hair, it was all about statement hair accessories. While Alexander Wang pushed to resurrect the claw clip and Prabal Gurung advocated for those zigzag headbands, the majority of hair accents were all about the bling. Michael Kors relied on sparkling versions of the bow barrettes we sported as kids. (Simone Rocha also embraced bold bows in red and black.) No one does maximalism better than Dolce & Gabbana and this season the brand favored barrettes with one model’s head literally covered in the bedazzled accents.

Sparkling locks were also popular for Spring 2018.
Dries Van Noten Spring 2018, Thom Browne Spring 2018, Gucci Spring 2018; Images: Imaxtree

Despite their newfound ubiquitousness, OTT hair accents aren’t a new trend. During the Spring 2018 season, hairstylists went super luxe decorating manes with everything from diamantés along part lines (Dries Van Noten) to dousing heads in glitter (Thom Browne) and even a parade of brooch-like glitzy bows (Gucci).

Fall 2017 was also full of flashy hair accessories.
N°21 Fall 2017, Miu Miu Fall 2017, La Perla Fall 2017; Images: Imaxtree

And blingy hair accessories also popped up back in Fall 2017. N°21 was relatively low key, simply tucking back models’ strands with rhinestone barrettes, while La Perla nestled a few clips into models’ voluminous tresses. But Miu Miu outdid everyone by topping off its models with beaded bands, one even featured dripping diamonds down the back of the head.

The first stop off the runways is usually the red carpet and the glitzy hair accessories movement was no exception. The Oscars saw stars like Lupita Nyong’o and Tiffany Haddish honoring their heritage with glistening updos. Saoirse Ronan took a chain mail approach to the top knot at a film festival and Anya Taylor-Joy actually rocked one of Dolce & Gabbana’s crowns at this year’s BAFTAs. See how celebs are going luxe when it comes to their hair in the slideshow above.

If you’re noticing a lot of black on tonight’s Golden Globe Awards red carpet, it’s not a trend. At least not one motivated by fashion. Attendees are wearing black to show their support for the Time’s Up initiative started to bring attention to sexual harassment in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal (and the numerous scandals that followed). The movement is also raising funds to provide “subsidized legal support to those who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace.” Several actresses are also walking the red carpet with noted women’s rights activists to make an even louder statement on the red carpet.
