The 2024 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival is still ablaze down on the French Riviera, with the glitzy resort town having hosted a whole multitude of cinema stars, outstanding filmmakers and legends of the industry since Tuesday, May 14 (and the highly-anticipated closing ceremony is set to take place tomorrow). To say the past few days have provided an absolute masterclass in red carpet dressing would be an understatement. Many of the A-list attendees have adored the iconic Cannes Film Festival red carpet in ultra-glamorous creations from the world’s most prestigious couture houses, while some (like Naomi Campbell) have unearthed looks from the archives.

From Bella Hadid proving to be the ultimate queen of Cannes donning a dramatic black Versace gown from the Italian fashion house’s Spring 2001 couture collection to this year’s jury president Greta Gerwig ascending the steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrèso having a full-on Barbiecore moment dressed in a Balenciaga couture confection – here’s even more standout style moments from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival:

It feels like forever since there’s been a red carpet event. (In actuality, it’s only been a few months since The Fashion Awards 2021.) But the glamour was definitely back in full force at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. And we’re certainly not complaining one bit. It’s a great way to kick off the slightly delayed 2022 award season.

The usual stars really shined bright. Cate Blanchett and Lady Gaga both wowed in Armani Privé. Elle Fanning ditched a dress in favor of a gorgeous Gucci ensemble. Jessica Chastain also suited up in Christian Dior haute couture. Julianna Margulies and Jada Pinkett Smith both went the vintage route wearing Narciso Rodriguez and Gareth Pugh respectively.

A couple of newcomers also turned heads. CODA actress Emilia Jones stunned in a truly spectacular Givenchy gown. Breakout Squid Game star and model HoYeon Jung rocked an embellished Louis Vuitton creation along with a matching hair accessory.

The jewelry was mesmerizing, too. Gaga was decked out in diamonds courtesy of Tiffany & Co. While Selena Gomez’s Bvlgari Serpenti choker was elegance personified. Her statement ring was pretty striking as well.

You could say that Vogue Germany hasn’t been our go-to magazine over recent months. But the German fashion bible is slowly but surely attempting to regain our interest by tapping Hailey Bieber last month and now catering to our love of age diversity with the unveiling of its May 2020 offering. Women 50 and over are rare sights down at the newsstand so we’re ecstatic to see Helen Mirren, Sharon Stone and Iris Berben on a trio of covers. Photographed by Liz Collins and styled by Nicola Knels and Paris Libby, the ladies suit up in looks from Burberry, Dsquared2 and Jil Sander for their respective covers.

According to our forum members, the covers proved to be a huge missed opportunity. “I am sorry, but why did they choose a photo where Helen looks like an idiot? She’s such a gorgeous woman. Sharon’s cover is nice, but gives me déjà vu. The third one is pretty, but a bit basic,” called out Srdjan.

“These are all bad. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such unflattering shots of them before,” expressed SLFC.

“Fashion magazines have decided to show older women on covers, but it’s clear most of them don’t have a clue what to do with them. These women are invariably shot in some bland pose with awful clothes, looking stiff and bored while the magazine collects plaudits for allowing a few wrinkles on their cover,” said tigerrouge.

“Yeah, cause what else could you do with three mature women besides dressing them in ugly, drab clothes inside a boring studio? Truly groundbreaking,” agreed aracic.

“What a terrible waste of three brilliant cover subjects — everything is utterly dreadful here from the bland photography of Liz Collins to the lazy styling. Instantly forgettable!” declared vogue28.

“Everything about these covers is wrong. Helen’s cover actually made me laugh. Poor lady!” Royal-Galliano chimed in.

There was a lot of color on the red carpet at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. We were treated to retina-burning reds, bright pinks, splashes of yellow and even neon green. The other major trend? Structure. From Cate Blanchett’s pleated sleeves to Joey King’s mesmerizing cape dress to Charlize Theron’s black bodice. There were also plenty of pantsuits and jumpsuits to fawn over.

It’s finally here. After the gorgeous beauty looks at the Golden Globes and the wild looks at the Grammys, it’s the Oscars. While a lot of people were curious to see who would (actually) win the award for Best Picture, we were eagerly anticipating what celebrities were going to show up in for the 2019 Oscars. After all, it’s the grand finale of awards shows. Celebrities save their very best looks for last and go big with their hair and makeup.

Many stars didn’t disappoint. The glam meters were turned up high. We saw “big” beauty in a literal sense in some instances with sweeping hairstyles and statement hair accessories. Plus, there were a few stars who opted for dramatic hair color switch-ups. We even spotted some fashion month beauty trends like barrettes, headbands and dewy skin.

In some cases, it seemed like the need to slay at the Oscars was too much and celebrities crippled under the pressure. The results were some questionable hair and makeup looks featuring overzealous uses of eyeliner and teasing combs.

The Cannes International Film Festival is known for grand gowns and boy, did it deliver this year. Of course, it helped that the 2018 jury president was none other than Cate Blanchett. Her many red carpet outings left no doubt who the queen of this festival was. We saw lots of capes, elaborate trains and the ever-present see-through dresses (one even came with a set of matching boots). But we were surprised that peach proved popular, vintage gowns were favored over current collections in many cases and that everything from shorter hemlines to suits were welcomed(?).

In the midst of all the fashion and fanfare, 82 women took part in a women’s march to call attention to the need for more women filmmakers and the festival’s complicity in this stark lack of diversity. The number of stars that took part was significant (Blanchett, Léa Seydoux and Salma Hayek were just some of the big names) because it represented the 82 female directors who have been part of the festival over its history, a far cry from the number of male directors whose films have been accepted.
