The 2024 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival is still ablaze down on the French Riviera, with the glitzy resort town having hosted a whole multitude of cinema stars, outstanding filmmakers and legends of the industry since Tuesday, May 14 (and the highly-anticipated closing ceremony is set to take place tomorrow). To say the past few days have provided an absolute masterclass in red carpet dressing would be an understatement. Many of the A-list attendees have adored the iconic Cannes Film Festival red carpet in ultra-glamorous creations from the world’s most prestigious couture houses, while some (like Naomi Campbell) have unearthed looks from the archives.

From Bella Hadid proving to be the ultimate queen of Cannes donning a dramatic black Versace gown from the Italian fashion house’s Spring 2001 couture collection to this year’s jury president Greta Gerwig ascending the steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrèso having a full-on Barbiecore moment dressed in a Balenciaga couture confection – here’s even more standout style moments from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival:

After skipping 2020 and scaling back for 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival is back in full force. Which is great for us since it usually produces fashion moments on par with the Met Gala and the Oscars. Although we have to admit, a decent amount of looks were relatively lackluster.

When it comes to designers, certain ones reigned supreme. We witnessed several dresses from Valentino’s Fall 2022 offering, aka the pink collection, take to the red carpet. Sharon Stone stuck with Dolce & Gabbana probably because she stars in the Italian fashion house’s new handbag campaign. As usual, there were plenty of haute couture looks to go around. Fendi, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior and Chanel are just a small sampling. Custom creations were also trending with Cara Delevingne’s revealing Balmain gown one of the standouts.

The jewelry was also something to behold. Especially when it came to necklaces. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta dress was amplified by Bulgari’s Eden The Garden of Wonders necklace, for example.

On the beauty front, hair really turned heads. Bella Hadid’s wet-look hairdo with sculpted strands in the middle of her forehead really made a statement. As did Grace Elizabeth’s piecey pixie.

If the Met Gala is equivalent to the Oscars in the fashion world, then the Cannes International Film Festival would be like the Golden Globes. Or all of Haute Couture Fashion Week set against the backdrop of the French Riviera. Whatever way you frame it, there’s no denying that the festival produces a cavalcade of luxe gowns from some of the biggest fashion houses around. We’re talking Chanel, Elie Saab, Christian Dior, Versace, Armani…you get the idea. But this year, two of the biggest wow moments came courtesy of two relative unknowns — Michael Cinco and Michael Halpern.

Trains were popular and grand with celebs going to great lengths to make a statement (and causing extra work for those underappreciated dress fluffers). The see-through trend was still going strong, though thankfully, most pieces did a good job camouflaging attendees’ private parts. We saw a few jumpsuits/pantsuits this go-round, mostly pulled off with great aplomb. A couple of wedding dresses found their way to the festival, which surprisingly translated pretty well to the red carpet. The star power in the front rows shined just as bright as the City of Light itself for this edition of Paris Fashion Week. While we weren’t surprised to see certain brand ambassadors and muses pop up at select shows (like Rihanna at Christian Dior along with Cara Delevingne at Chanel), we weren’t expecting to see so much of Maria Sharapova, Janelle Monáe and Jada Pinkett Smith, who each took in several high-profile presentations. Attendees did their best to bring a little Parisian flair to the front rows decked out in everything from luxe sweaters to draped jackets and even some impressive toppers.
